You probably have noticed that during the previous four years The Combustion Institute has been very active; it has sponsored summer schools, created a new Warnatz Gold Medal, a new Hiroshi Tsuji Early Career Researcher Award, and has initiated industry talks (perspectives) at symposia. There are new term limits for the Board of Directors – these limits will achieve more turnover to allow more people to serve. Now as I lead the new Executive Committee we are continuing to implement these improvements and we are making other executive changes.

This quarterly newsletter is our way to tell you about what we are doing. We want to inform you of the interesting things that are happening around the world in our 35 sections. So please see the links below that will direct you to some interesting and informative articles.

A recent activity has been our site visit to Dublin. The program co-chairs of the 37th Symposium are Heinz Pitsch and Hai Wang; they have been working with Barb Waronek, our Executive Administrator, with me, and with the institute site committee, headed by Uwe Riedel. The local hosts are John Simmie, Henry Curran, Stephen Dooley, and Rory Monaghan; they impressed us with all the beauty and accessibility that Dublin has to offer. It should be a memorable symposium.

Another activity has been our effort to encourage each section to register all of its members on our new Account Management System (AMS). The AMS will help us communicate with all members via this quarterly newsletter. I also encourage our combustion community to follow our social media channels. As always, we strive to make our institute transparent to our members, and so I welcome any questions that you may have.

Summer Schools Proposal Deadline: 31 March 2017 - The deadline for 2018 Combustion Institute-Summer Schools proposals are due no later than 31 March 2017. The Combustion Institute invites universities, CI Sections, and other qualified organizations to submit their proposals in accordance with the defined guidelines.

Proceedings of The Combustion Institute Publishing Soon - Volume 36 of the Proceedings of The Combustion Institute (PROCI) will ship by mid-February 2017 to those who placed advanced orders during registration for the 36th International Symposium on Combustion in Seoul, Korea. Verified members of a CI Section who did not place an advanced order may contact CI with their name, billing address, and shipping address. Elsevier will then provide a member discount on a print volume.

Planning for the 37th International Symposium on Combustion - As the international combustion community celebrates the new year, planning for the 37th International Symposium on Combustion at the Convention Centre Dublin (CCD), Ireland is well underway. Program Co-Chairs (PCCs) Heinz Pitsch and Hai Wang are currently evaluating several processes that form the foundation of a successful symposium. The paper submission process, combustion colloquia categories, and potential colloquia teams are all under review. The selection of possible speakers will also be brought forward during the first quarter of 2017.

Combustion and Flame Honors Norbert Peters - The Combustion Institute journal, Combustion and Flame, has published a special issue to honor the work and life of the late Professor Norbert Peters (10 July 1942 – 4 July 2015), RWTH Aachen University, Germany. The special January issue contains twenty-five original research articles by friends and colleagues of Prof. Peters, spanning a range of topics on which he had made significant advances in his own research.

New Editorial Board Members: Combustion and Flame - Beginning 1 January 2017, six new editorial board members will launch their six-year terms for The Combustion Institute journal, Combustion and Flame. The new members succeed six retiring members. Every two years, terms end for one-third of the editorial board to ensure a regular rotation of combustion experts that maintain the publishing of the best scientific work. That practice has advanced Combustion and Flame as a critical source for combustion research.
