6th International Flame Chemistry Workshop

The 6th International Flame Chemistry Workshop was held virtually 15-19 August 2022. This biennial workshop series brings together experts in gas-phase chemical kinetics. Almost 150 colleagues from Australia, Asia, Europe, and the Americas registered, which was a record for this workshop. A wide range of topics were discussed, which included low-temperature oxidation chemistry, theory and uncertainty in mechanism development, formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and soot, flame synthesis, nitrogen chemistry, and multi-physics phenomena (i.e., plasma-assisted combustion, battery thermal runaways, biomass reforming, etc.). To promote inclusion, early career researchers were given the opportunities to present.

The workshop consisted of 30 invited and contributed talks, plus plenty of time for discussions. Thank you to Dr. Nils Hansen for providing this summary of the event, and to the organizers for their hard work on the workshop.

2nd Asia-Pacific Combustion Institute Summer School (APCISS-2)

The 2nd Asia-Pacific Combustion Institute Summer School (APCISS-2) on Fundamental Combustion Problems in Outdoor Fires, hosted by the Chilean Section of The Combustion Institute, took place in Valparaiso and Vina del Mar, Chile, from 4-9 December 2022.

The school brought together participants from over 15 different countries and included topics relevant to wildland fires, such as Introduction to Fundamental Combustion Challenges, Fire Dynamics, Non-Homogeneous Gas-Solid Interactions, Combustion Chemistry, Radiative Heat Transfer, Soot Production, Experimental Insight into Flames, Wildland Fire Dynamics, Fire Risk Management at the WUI, and Flammability Testing. In addition to the lectures, there were two workshop sessions focused on experimentation and fire modeling, and a poster session. For more information, read here.

12th Mediterranean Symposium on Combustion
This symposium, held 23-26 January 2023 in Luxor, Egypt, was the twelfth in a series on combustion and related topics. The symposium brought together combustion scientists, particularly engineers and students from the Mediterranean area, to facilitate the dissemination of state-of-the-art advances in combustion research and to enhance future collaborative research activities. You can read more about the event on The Combustion Institute's website.
13th United States National Combustion Meeting
The 13th U.S. National Combustion Meeting will convene on the campus of Texas A&M University from 20-22 March 2023. The Central States Section of the CI will host the 13th meeting, which has been organized biennially since 1999 by the joint US Sections of The Combustion Institute (the Western States Section, the Eastern States Section, and the Central States Section). More information is available here.
CFD for Combustion Safety
The objective of the CFD for Combustion Safety meeting, to be held on 21 March 2023 in Toulouse, France, is to gather experts in the field of simulations of safety scenarios associated to combustion (fires, explosions, flame-wall interactions, inhibition, etc.). This event will allow them to exchange information and build collaborations on the fundamentals of combustion safety.
4th International Workshop on Oxy-Fuel Combustion
This event will focus on combustion of solid fuels in air and CO2/O2-atmosphere. It will address researchers in industry, universities, and research centers concerned with solid fuel combustion and heat transfer processes. This workshop will be held in Napoli, Italy from 22-23 March 2023. More information can be found here.
15th International Conference on Combustion Technologies for a Clean Environment (Clean Air 2023)
Clean Air 2023 will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, from 25 to 29 June 2023. The deadline to submit extended abstracts is 31 January 2023, with more information about the event available on the Clean Air 2023 website.
