Hello

As the founder of The Pet professional Guild  I have the pleasure to facilitate and listen to a selection of great educational webinars. On  Sunday evening I participated in a  webinar presented by Dr. Jean Dodds on Pet Nutrition. What a fabulous experience and one I feel all pet owners should have the opportunity to participate in.

The webinar covered so much more than nutrition.  It covered food allergies, food intolerances and all the clinical signs relating to these. It discussed diets, liver cleaning procdures many more topics. I learned about new food allergy testing procedures using saliva samples which are much less invasive than blood and skin tests.

One of my key takeaways from this webinar was the importance of feeding a grain free diet and ensuring that the protein is not just in the correct quantity but also the correct quality.

If you would like to learn more for a small fee with proceeds donated to Dr.Jean's Nonprofit you can register here for the webinar.

At The DogSmith we have always reccomended a holistic pet food with high quality ingredients.  Learn more here .

Teach Your Kids to Talk Dog

As the weather warms make sure
your children know how to be safe around dogs.

No one knows exactly why, but there seems to be a correlation between warmer weather and an increase in dog bites inflicted on children.  An article published in Science News  (March 2, 2009 - Dog Bites A Particular Threat To Young Children, Especially As Temperatures Rise - American Academy of Otolaryngology -- Head and Neck Surgery) cites an evaluation of 84 cases of dog bites in children over an eight-year period, where the article’s authors found “that most injuries were caused by family pets (27%), with a high frequency of injuries occurring during the summer months.” Possible reasons for this increase may include warmer weather means children are spending more time outdoors playing with dogs or perhaps dogs become generally more irritable in higher temperatures.  Whatever the reason it is important that children understand how to behave around dogs.  It is estimated that 1 percent of all emergency room visits can be attributed to dog bite injuries, including 44,000 annual cases of facial injuries in the United States alone.

An earlier report by the British Medical Journal (February 24, 2007 - Children Should Not Be Left Unsupervised With Dogs, Say Experts) suggests that children should never be left unsupervised with dogs and recommends that all children should be taught to treat dogs with respect. Specifically, children should be taught to avoid direct eye contact and not to approach an unfamiliar dog; play with any dog unless under close supervision; run or scream in the presence of a dog; pet a dog without first letting it sniff you; and not tease them or disturb a dog that is eating, sleeping or caring for puppies.
