DogSmith Dog Talk July 2012
Volume #1, Newsletter #8 July-2012
Hello,

The Dog Days of Summer are upon as once again.  Typically the hottest, most humid days of summer in the Northern Hemisphere the “Dog Days” are so named for the star Sirius, the Dog Star, which is the brightest star in the Canis Major (Large Dog) constellation.  Although no longer true, in ancient times Sirius rose approximately at sunrise so the constellation was always associated with summer’s hottest weather.  The Romans even sacrificed dogs to ‘appease’ Sirius and the French word “canicule,” meaning heat wave, is derived from “little dog” referring to Sirius.   Read more here...
