 DogSmith Product Review
Squirrel Dude 'Pup-sicle'

If you have a chewer or if you simply want to keep your dog entertained and engaged for extended periods try using the Squirrel Dude from Premier Pet Products.  The Squirrel Dude will randomly dispense treats while erratically bouncing around as your pup plays and is available in small, medium and large.  There is also a puppy version available in extra-small, small and medium which are made of softer rubber that are gentle for puppy teeth but durable enough for extended playtime.  The standard Squirrel Dude is highly durable and features a patented “treat meter” that controls how many kibbles or dry treats are dispensed as your dog plays and chews.  For even a greater challenge, and a cool treat all year long, mix your dog’s regular kibble with yogurt or water then stuff the mixture into the Squirrel Dude and pop into the freezer until well frozen.  You can even keep several in the freezer to be used on a rotating basis.  Your dog will delight in the mental and physical challenge of getting the tasty treat out of the Squirrel Dude.  You can even use this method to feed them their entire meal keeping them busy for hours. Contact your local DogSmith for other great ideas to keep your pup physically and mentally exercised.

Panama City Beach Florida's
First Yappy Hour

Dogs whined while owners dined, and there was not a soul that appeared to mind at Panama City Beach's first-ever "Yappy Hour" on February 4.

The DogSmith of Florida's Emerald Coast sponsored the inaugural event which benefited the "Pets Are Working Saints" therapeutic ministry. The canine conflagration was coordinated by Bay Families with Dogs, Salty Sue's and The DogSmith as a celebration of the first restaurant to obtain its "Doggie Dining" permit from the City of Panama City Beach. The event featured raffles, door prizes, canine trivia contests, and human and canine cuisine as well as a fenced-in dog play area complete with DogSmith agility equipment.

"Responsible dog owners appreciate the ability to be able to get a bite in an outdoor area of a restaurant while they are out with their pets," said Stephanie Somerset, the Executive Director of Bay Families with Dogs and the impetus behind Panama City Beach adopting the "Doggie Dining;" the optional ordinance made permanent by the 2009 Florida legislature.

"The only way pets can learn how to act appropriately in public is to practice in public," said Catherine Zehner, owner of The DogSmith of Florida's Emerald Coast. "The DogSmith is here to help at these events, and to provide supervised canine activities so that the events are fun for both the four-legged and two-legged participants."

Zehner, a certified dog trainer since 2008, periodically holds free "doggie dining" seminars throughout Bay, Walton and Okaloosa counties.

Basic Heart-worm and Heart-worm Prevention Facts

Many pet owners are unaware of the significant affect heartworms can have on their pet’s health. Heartworms are solely transmitted by mosquitoes which leave animals in the south, and especially Florida, at risk year-round.  After biting an infected dog, the mosquito injects circulating microfilaria (the worm larvae) into another animal where they then migrate to the dog's heart, maturing over time until the worms eventually obstruct blood flow and damage the heart muscle.  If untreated, heartworms will cause significant health complications and eventually death of the infected animal.  It is important to note that cats are also at risk of infection; however, there is currently no treatment available for the mature stages of heartworm in cats.

Administering monthly heartworm prevention works by cleaning out circulating microfilaria before they can reach the heart.  If an animal has not been receiving regular preventiative treatment, the first step is to visit your veterinarian for a heartworm test and a thorough physical exam before administering any form of heartworm prevention. Heartworms require six months to be diagnosed through a blood test.  If the first test is negative it is always a good idea to repeat again six months later. There are many prevention options available for both dogs and cats and you should consult with their veterinarian to choose which preventative is appropriate for each individual situation.  Once a prevention regimen has been implemented it is vital that it be performed year-round.
