Dear Subscriber,

Is Your Dog Protected?  Some Facts about Vaccinations

Vaccinations for your pets can be a confusing topic with seemingly conflicting advice and information offered by many.  Even informed owners often feel overwhelmed when it is time for their pet’s annual exam and may have questions such as; What should my dog be vaccinated for?  How often should I have them vaccinated?  What do the vaccines actually protect my pet from?  How do I know if my dog is “at risk”?

Vaccines are now divided into two classes. “Core” vaccines for dogs are those that should be given to every dog. “Noncore” vaccines are recommended only for certain dogs or situations. Whether to have the ‘noncore’ vaccinations will depend on exposure of the dog to the particular disease, the type of vaccine and how common the disease is in the geographical area where the dog lives or may visit.

DogSmith Service Product Review -
The DogSmith Slumber Party

When making your vacation plans, you should know that you have options on where to leave your pets (if they’re not coming with you).  In years past, pet-owners had fewer choices and normally boarded their pets in traditional kennels but this may not be the preferred solution for you or your pets.

If a commercial kennel isn’t right for you, The DogSmith has a selection of personal pet care services to fit every budget and lifestyle.  The DogSmith services range from simple daycare visits to fun-filled slumber parties in the home of a certified DogSmith Pet Care Technician.  A DogSmith Pet Care Technician can even stay in your home if you prefer or visit your ‘home-alone’ pet as frequently as you like.

DogSmith clients are always encouraged to meet their Pet Care Technician before the first stay to make sure you and your dog are comfortable and happy with the DogSmith program you’ve selected. Your local DogSmith will happily host a complimentary ‘open house’ to introduce you and your dog to their vacation home and their caregiver.  This will also give you the opportunity to see where and how your lovable pet will be living while it is on vacation and you will be able to discuss any preferences or concerns you may have with your pet’s routine with your DogSmith certified Technician.  Alternatively, your DogSmith Pet Care Technician will happily come to your home prior to any ‘home-alone’ visits.  Your DogSmith wants you completely comfortable and confident with the care your pet will be getting so you can enjoy absolute peace of mind while away.

All DogSmith Pet Care Technicians are certified, bonded and insured to care for your pet.  We know your veterinarian, your pet’s food, your pet’s schedule and favorite pastimes before you go away.  We make sure that their schedule remains as normal as possible in your absence, maintaining a comfortable family environment while you are away.

Stress-free, fun-packed, family living at its best.  Just like it ought to be, while you are away. For more information, contact your local DogSmith by calling (888) 364-7648 or visiting www.DogSmith.com where you can enter your zip code at the top of the page to locate your local DogSmith.

Learn More About Canine Behavior and Social Communication - Your Dog Will Thank You For It!
All behaviors that dogs exhibit are designed to either access pleasurable situations or avoid and escape unpleasant situations.  A dog’s communication system is much ritualized and designed to avoid or cutoff conflict. This has made dogs as a species very successful in terms of their numbers and their variety. Things go awry when we humans misread the signals dogs send us leaving them helpless to effectively communicate their feelings to us. We cannot know or understand what dogs think and vice-versa. What we can do is understand canine body language, observe dogs as we interact with them and then respond appropriately.  ‘Talking dog’ is simple if you remember a few important rules and it will make interacting with dogs fun and safe.  The dogs you come into contact with will really appreciate it.

DogSmith Product Review

The Pleat Sheet™

You don't need a bigger bed, you need a better sheet!

It is bad enough that our three dogs limit the available real estate on our king size bed.  But the 45 lb kelpie likes to not only go to bed before anyone else but she lays exactly in the middle, critically limiting the covers available to the rest of us.  The race to our bed to stake a claim at bedtime was becoming occasionally comical but mostly frustrating (especially since I was routinely being out run).

For years we were too embarrassed to admit our dilemma to anyone until we discovered we are not alone!  According to the American Pet Products Association's 2009-2010 National Pet Owners Survey, over 40 million pets sleep on the bed with their owner.

Then Premi
er Pet Products came to the rescue with their Pleat Sheet.  The Pleat Sheet is a complete sheet set featuring a patented expandable pleat that unfolds to create extra wings of cover and warmth at night, and easily folds back into the shape of a normal flat sheet for making up the bed in the morning. Each sheet set includes 2 pillowcases, 1 fitted sheet (designed to fit even deep mattresses), and 1 expandable top sheet.  The sheets are made from soft and comfortable 300 thread count 100% cotton sateen fabric with button closures for easy expanding and unfolding. Now I’m finally able to claim my fair share of the covers.

If you are interested in the Pleat Sheet, contact your local DogSmith.

No Need to Fear, The DogSmith North Tarrant County is Here!

Congratulations to Virginia and Randi Kamper, the DogSmiths of North Tarrant County, who recently completed the United Animal Nations (UAN) Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) volunteer training and are now qualified to be deployed to assist with the UAN’s mission of caring for animals displaced by natural disasters and other crises.

Founded in 1987, United Animal Nations (UAN) is a non-profit organization offering a variety of programs for displaced animals including emergency sheltering, disaster relief services, financial assistance and education.

The UAN drives their relief effort through its Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) volunteer program.  EARS volunteers are the backbone of the UAN effort and volunteers come from across the country and all walks-of-life, but they share a commitment to helping animals in need.

After completing the EARS volunteer training program, the Kampers, along with other EARS volunteers, may be assigned to a UAN rescue effort where they will help setting up and dismantling shelters, walking, grooming, feeding and socializing animals, reuniting animals with caregivers and transporting animals for vet care.

To learn more about the UAN volunteer program or to make a donation visit http://www.uan.org.
