K9 NOSE WORK
A Hunting Game... Dogs Love It!
K9 Nose Work is a game derived from Scent Detection training done with police and military dogs. All dogs are born with the skills to play this game! It's all about hunting-- for food or a favorite toy - and a whole lot more! To begin with, we work indoors and use boxes as containers for the 'hide' and then expand to the oudoors to do exterior building and vehicle searches. The focus is on dogs and handlers having fun doing something different from the usual obedience this and that in dog training. The benefits can be tremendous for many if not all dogs...K9 Nose Work provides dogs with an outlet for hunting and handlers see how amazing their dogs really are whn they get to do more of what comes naturally. ALL DOGS ARE WELCOME! Come out and have some fun!
My classes include the following held at No Bones About It in Brookline, MA. I will be teaching addtional classes at Happy Dog Day Care in Natick very soon!
Introduction to Nose Work
Dogs and owners (handlers) are introduced to scent detection training using treats, toys and boxes (containers). Dogs work indoors both on and off leash. Handlers focus on reading their dog's scenting ability.
9 -10 am Sundays July 11, 18, 25, Aug 1, 8, 15 (6 wks) in Brookline
Introduction to Odor
An essential oil (Sweet Birch) is paired with either a food or toy 'hide'. Dogs build confidence in hunting as the search area expands to the outdoors and includes 'elements'. Handlers continue to improve their handling and observation skills. [Prerequisite- Introduction to Nose Work]
9-10 am Sundays June 27, July 11, 18, 25, Aug 1, 8 (6 wks) in Brookline
Odor & Elements
Dogs and handlers develop confidence while hunting in more challenging and increasingly distracted environments, indoors and out. The hide is no longer paired with food. The oil is the hide! Handlers and dogs continue to work each of the 4 elements- the box drill and searches of vehicles and the interior and exterior of buildings. [Prerequisite- Introduction to Odor or having passed an Odor Recognition Test (ORT) at an NACSW sanctioned ORT]
7-8 pm Wed July 14, 21, 28 Aug 4, 11, 18 (6 wks) in Brookline
Beyond Birch
Two additional essential oils (Anise and Clove Bud) are added to the hunting repertoire! This is a further down the k9 nose work road- to be announced class....
