The Joy of Color Show

Allen Clapp is a consulting engineer and an artist. Applying both the
left side and right side of his brain to his art creates interesting, but complementary, contradictions between delicate and riotous combinations of color and texture.

The Joy of Color Show features abstract acrylic paintings from his Dots and Lines Series and his Earth Series. The Dots and Lines paintings are very structured in composition, with lines and bright spots playing against muted colors. The Earth paintings are very loose and use rich, complementary colors in subtle variations to produce harmonious movement in a symphony of color.

Opening reception Friday, July 6, 6 - 10 PM.    Show runs through July 30.

Cows!!

Loading the cow

The International Cow Parade is coming to the Triangle this summer! The event is a fund raiser for the UNC Children’s Hospital. Two designs by Susan Jones and Lee Ball have been selected for this event: Wi-Fi Cow Spot and Fracticow. The first cow made it safely across the Atlantic and work has been started.  They expect the second cow to arrive shortly.
Fracticow

Regarding the Wi-Fi cow, Susan states, "Our lives revolve around our battery powered electronic gadgets. Inconvenience, and sometimes panic, ensues when the batteries die. Never fear, you can now add a small solar panel to your gadget collection to help you stay in touch and entertained!
When I saw a portable solar panel in the hiking department of an outdoors store, I was struck by the irony. I go outdoors to get away from it all and now I can take it all with me. This lady represents our reliance on technology with a CPU for a brain and the accoutrements for accessories. With her very own solar panel, she can stay connected where ever she roams."  Susan says the mosaic cows are some of her favorites from previous Cow Parades. They are very tactile and it is intriguing to think that an artist cut and placed with care, every single piece of the mosaic. When Vietri offered their broken pieces of handcrafted Italian dishes and dinnerware, Susan and Lee jumped on the chance to create a mosaic masterpiece. They are working on a design that will tie the colors and rural themes of Vietri to our agricultural heritage in the triangle. Kim Stout, a talented mosaic artist, will be joining them on Fracticow. The Cows will be displayed around town in August and will be auctioned in October.

Cyclo.Via in Boone, NC

Tunde Afolayan participated in Boone NC's first ever Cyclo.Via street festival on Sunday June 26th.  The free event allowed bicyclists, pedestrians, and all other non-motorized traffic to enjoy car-free, safe streets for five hours.  The idea for Cyclo.Via – a spanish term meaning “bike path” – originated in Bogota, Columbia in the 1970’s where currently 70 miles of roadway are closed down every Sunday and holiday for recreation.  Recently, the idea has spread around the world with similar events in Australia, Paris, Ottawa, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Roanoke, VA.

Susan Jones and Lee Ball will be in Ashville June 30, participating in a weekend of Art in the Park held in Ashville’s Pack Square Park.

Lee will also be a featured chalk artist in Asheville's Bele Chere Festival June 27-29. She will be chalking on Wall street.

Lori White was one of the painters in the largest gathering in history of plein air painters painting simultaneously, at the Plein Air Convention in Red Rock, Nevada.  Lori's painting Lake Lynn Heron was accepted into the Oil Painters of America 21st Annual Exhibition of Traditional Oils.  Lori's painting Umstead Meadow was accepted into the 2012 statewide exhibition On Common Ground: Pastel Paintings From The Mountains To The Sea, currently showing at Bev's Fine Art in Raleigh, NC.
