 Perils of Plein Air Painting

Linda Plein Air Painting
My first plein air experience was fun. It was an annual event hosted by Local Color Gallery. On a beautiful, sunny April day we painted in downtown Raleigh. I had done a little pre-planning and determined where the sun would be shining on my subject later in the day. I did not, however consider where it would be shining on me. As the day progressed, I began to bake like a chicken tender. I borrowed a regular hand held umbrella from one of my fellow artists to help shade me and block the glare. It didn’t really work. As I concentrated on my painting I would forget about the umbrella and the shade it was supposed to provide. Squinting like a mad woman, I was holding the umbrella out behind me while reaching forward to apply paint to my canvas.  I looked very much like an unbalanced trapeze artist or perhaps I just looked unbalanced. There is a photograph floating out there somewhere to prove it. At the end of the day I was well stretched and well done.  My piece turned out adequately and I did capture the subject but I don’t expect to see the Metropolitan Museum of Art banging down my door anytime soon. Seriously though, it wasn’t bad for a first try.

If you would like to read more about my misadventures with plein air painting, check out our website.
