Ship's Harbor by LInda Eddins
Denise's View by LInda Eddins

Close to Heart and Home is an exploration of the places and things Linda Eddins loves best. From the wooden boats and marshlands of Harkers Island to colorful mountain overlooks, she captures the beauty that this state is known for.  Choosing the medium that best suits the mood and the subject, Linda works in oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolor.  Her confident use of light and space, bright colors and clean composition captures the critical moment, pale morning light rising behind a sleepy harbor, vibrant yellows framing a wading heron. Linda's paintings take us on a journey across North Carolina.

Preview Reception is Thursday, October 4, 6 - 9 PM
First Friday Reception is October 5, 6 - 9:30 PM
Show runs through October 27

Rick and Lee are Winners at the SparkCon Street Painting Festival
Rick Bennet Wins the Originality Award -
The most important elements for chalking street art is good padding for your knees, lots of water, a good hat for shade and some inspiration, in that order. Because of the large scale a good reference photo with a grid on it is important for getting proportion right. For my fighting roosters I needed the heads in place and in proportion in the reference photo to get it believable in the the final art.  Photoshop is my friend. I used google to search online through hundreds of rooster heads to get the right angle to match to my boxers bodies.  A good sketch is the first step.  Once chalk is down changes can make muddy areas. Getting it right from the start is critical.  I work on the challenging detail areas first while I am fresh.  If I get those right the other areas rough in easier. Chalk is vibrant and the colors glow in the outdoor light. Street painting is most successful when the artist pushes the values and creates a sense of dimension.  Whether or not this street painting is successful is up to the viewer but the stream of people at the Sparkcon festival this year laughed and said it was awesome.  I won Originality Award in the Adult Category.  That was worth 13 hours on my knees. Thank you O2 FItness for sponsoring my square.  - Rick Bennett

Lee Ball Wins the Best in Design Award -
Lee Ball participated in the artSPARK sidewalk chalk competition this year on Fayetteville Street alongside fellow Tipping Painter Rick Bennett. Lee shared the Best in Design Award with Sonya Harding in this year's event. It was tough working on Sunday as an unexpected rain event caused mayhem. Here is the plastic bag quilt Lee used to "protect" her work. It did not work as well as wanted. The second picture shows how much work was needed to recover!

NC Cow Parade Update
The ladies are all in place! Susan and Lee have been to visit Mookey and Wi-Fi and are happy to report that the girls seem quite at home in their new locations. Wi-Fi stands guard at the Wells Fargo Bank in RTP on Park Drive (just off Davies at 40). She's having a little trouble reading her Mooopedia but looks very content. Mookey is receiving a lot of attention in her new home on UNC campus, outside the Children's Hospital near Skipper Bowles Drive. You can find a map of the herd on http://cowparadenc.com/. Stop by for a visit! The cows will be on display until December 7th.
