Robotic Fabricating Changes Farm Equipment Repair and Customization

Tractor Wheels

It might go against our preconceived idea of the hands-in-the-soil farm worker, but over the last decade, the American farmer has gone high-tech.

GPS-unit-controlled tractors, computer-automated spraying, and CNC machine manufacturing are just three of the ways that farmers are squeezing out more productivity and increasing efficiencies by harnessing technology.

At Torchmate, we build a wide range of CNC fabricating and prototyping machinery that has revolutionized farm equipment repair and manufacturing. Computer-numeric-controlled automation means that farms can repair, customize or fabricate the machinery they need to plow or harvest their crops quickly and efficiently on-site.

Here are three ways a CNC machine can save farmers and farm repair shops time and money:

 • Tractor Repair: The all-metal bodies and straight-forward design of tractors make them uniquely suited for quick and efficient CNC repair. CNC machines excel at fabricating suspension and steering components, engine mounts, brackets and trick tabs. The versatility of the automated machinery allows a farmer to replace metal parts by using existing parts as templates, beef up existing components, or fabricate new custom components. A CNC machine allows farmers to repair equipment on the spot, and continue working without long periods of downtime.

 • Attachment Repair and Customization: The variety of tillers, furrowers, seeders and harvesting attachments that a tractor uses can fill a farmyard. Each of these metal attachments gets dragged through fields for hours on end each day and often requires simple repairs that can be accomplished with a welder and a CNC machine in a matter of minutes. The attachments can also easily be customized with a CNC machine to make them work for specific fields or specific crops.

For farmers who work in short weather windows, intense harvest seasons, and critical seeding timeframes, the quick turnaround on equipment repair is not just a convenience; it is imperative to a successful crop harvest. A CNC fabricating machine gives farmers the piece of mind to know that they can handle most repairs in-house, so they can keep their equipment in the field, not in the maintenance yard or mechanic shop.

Farm equipment repair shops find that an in-house CNC machine allows them to deliver quick and customized repairs without waiting for parts to be ordered and shipped.

 • Farm Fabricating: Some farm jobs require custom solutions. A tractor or truck might need a specialized hitch or custom side rails. A loader may need a custom mount or an alteration to its bucket. The farm may need metal fencing, metal signs, sturdy animal pens or cattle chutes. A CNC machine with CAD software, allows a ranch hand or farmer to build anything he can dream up and design. CNC machines are particular useful for off-season maintenance work, repairs and upgrades. In the dead of winter, farmers can prepare for next season by upgrading equipment, building new equipment or designing and fabricating upgrades to the farm or ranch.

Efficient and Precise Automation Boosts Production for Metal Fencing and handrail Contractors
Fencing and Handrails

Marinas, agriculture operations, subdivisions and schools all demand increasingly complex fences and handrail projects. And metal, because of its low maintenance requirements, durability and strength, is one of the most popular materials on the market.

But unlike wood, metal fencing and handrail projects require a number of skilled processes during fabrication. Cutting, welding, grinding and beveling are often all required to complete metal fencing projects. For years the industry assumption was that these processes all needed to be completed by hand. But today newer, affordable automation is within the reach of handrail and fencing contractors, allowing the businesses to complete more work in less time without hiring more staff. And the automation eliminates secondary processes, reducing mistakes and material waste while saving significant fabrication time.

Until recently, automated pipe-cutting equipment was thought of as a product for only large industrial corporations like refinery contractors, pipeline builders and off-shore fabricators. That is no longer true. Like the increasingly affordable technology in communication and computing, automated pipe-cutting equipment is rapidly becoming an affordable and versatile tool for a wide range of contractors and manufacturers.

What makes pipe-cutting machinery particularly suitable for fencing and handrail contractors is the repetitive nature of cutting fence and handrail components. Basic fences have uniform post and cross-beam lengths. And even intricate fencing has a high percentage of repetitive cutting. Automated pipe-cutting machinery allows those cuts to be quickly programmed into the machine’s software and the machine literally handles the rest. Depending on the machine, pipe-cutting machinery can handle square, round or rectangular material.

Armed with the repeatability of automated pipe-cutting machinery, a fencing or handrail contractor can churn out completed products in a fraction of the time it takes to build a fence by hand. The machine handles almost all of the work, including material loading and unloading, turning the labor-intensive hand cutting into an automated process.

The precision of the cut makes welding quick, easy and much more precise. Fencing contractors will end up delivering a superior product in a much less time. The capabilities of automated machinery also allows a contractor to take on much more intricate work that may not have been previously within their offerings before buying a pipe-cutting machine. Machines can come with the capability of cutting complex angles and accents with ease, handling out-of-round pipes, and making beveled cuts.
