Dear Subscriber,
As the oil continues to gush in the Gulf, transitioning off fossil fuels is a topic that may make sense to more people than ever before. I count myself as lucky to be part of a worldwide movement to respond to the urgent needs of the time with positive community initiative.
Transition is both heady and heart-y. Yesterday I made a presentation to the City Council, explaining what TSC is. I had tailored my presentation to what I thought of as the no-nonsense orientation of the Council setting, but to my surprise, at the end council member Lynn Robinson remarked, "This should end with a song!" Maybe she caught the spirit of the Transition movement.
This month brings opportunities to connect with your head, heart, and hands: a potluck with a purpose, a community garden installation, inspiring storytelling, and more.
See you there.

Potluck to feature The Harrisons
| We are in for a treat at this month's Potluck with a Purpose (see sidebar), as our local treasures and world-reknown ecological artists Helen and Newton Harrison speak and show pictures of a couple of the countless striking and powerful projects they have done throughout the world.
Their work, which you can see samples of at their website, always stimulates thought and in some cases has resulted in dramatic action towards ecosystem restoration.
The potluck will be a rare opportunity to visit with them up close and personal, and ask them about their ideas for building resilience in Santa Cruz. |
Community Garden Work/Playday
| Friday, June 25th at 4pm will be a great chance to put in a community food garden where one is sorely needed.
Sycamore Street Commons, at 125 Sycamore St., between the end of Cedar St. and South Pacific
Ave., is a low-income housing complex that is partnering with the TSC Food Group to create a garden for the residents.
We hope to make it a Grow Food Party-like atmosphere
and we would love you to come and help play and create gardens and
community. Contact Batya for info, or just show up!
We also need materials and tools. See the list on our website, and let us know if you can contribute.

Storytelling Session with Jon Young
| Friday, June 18
6:30-9 pm
Waldorf School,
2190 Empire Grade
Free/by donation
Here is a special invitation to come hear one of the most important
stories of our time - The Peacemaker Story, told by Jon Young.
The
Peacemaker Story is a story of the Hodenosaunee People
(Iroquois Confederacy) and is surprisingly a huge part of our lineage
in this country. This story presents triumphs of
peace from the past and paints a vision for community for the next 200
years that can inspire our work for Transition.
See the flier here.
