Transition Santa Cruz Newsletter
October 2010
Dear Subscriber,

Happy Birthday, Santa Cruz!

October is the month Santa Cruz' birthday is traditionally celebrated, because Mission Santa Cruz was founded around this time of year in 1791. TSC took the occasion this year to celebrate not just the 219 years since then, but the entire 10,000 year history of humans (that we know of) living in this place.

Last Saturday, about 130 people gathered at Louden Nelson Auditorium to celebrate with a multi-musician sit-down show followed by a dance set with Extra Large. Along the way, we had a guided visualization about the present and future of Santa Cruz, a conga line led by a giant Banana Slug, bicycle-blended smoothies, TSC info tables, and free cake, cupcakes and cookies for all.

From Al Frisby singing "Bad Soymilk" to Gail Swain leading the crowd in "This Town is Your Town," it was a very Santa Cruz evening, and one that we will keep in our hearts all year.

If you weren't there, we missed you! However, the Transition Train keeps rolling, and there's plenty to do this month, so read on, and we'll see you soon.

Many communities in the US have some form of exchange that can only be used in the local area. One of the best, Sonoma GoLocal, is an innovative program that uses principles of cooperative economics and financial sustainability to create a shift toward local commerce.

Fortunately, we have a local group ready to set up a made-for-Santa Cruz version of the GoLocal system here in Santa Cruz! You can hear all about it with Derek Huntington from Sonoma and Langdon Roberts from local group New Earth Exchange. More info here.
Wear your true colors!

TSC T-shirts are now available!

We procrastinated, because...well, we're not really into selling stuff. But we finally have them, and they are a great way to start a conversation and let people know what you think about the future of our community.

Screenprinted by BU Productions (Barrios Unidos) in 5 colors on organic cotton, "natural" color shirts, they feel great to wear.

They're $15 each. Get one by emailing or calling us at 427-9916, and tell us your size.

Here's an easy way to help Transition that you can do from home.

We'd like to know how the ideas and community of Transition have impacted your life. Have you brought a garden to life, installed a graywater system, or started to build relationships with your neighbors? Perhaps you've made a major decision based on the concepts of relocalization or resilience, or maybe the existence of Transition Santa Cruz has helped you cut through despair and find hopefulness about the future.

We sincerely believe that the sharing of positive stories of change, large or small, is one of the most effective ways to spread that change. To share yours, email us or call 427-9916.

If you have studied any of the areas that the Plan covers, particularly Energy and Waste Management, or have some proposals for an area you feel is missing in the Plan (for example, coping with Peak Oil or adapting to climate change effects), please contact us soon.

Save the Date: On Saturday morning, November 13, we will be meeting with Ross Clark from the City to discuss our proposals. All are invited.

Climate Action Plan + Imagination =
Transition!

The public conversation about making Santa Cruz a more energy-efficient town is happening. Local leaders are looking to the community for ideas on how to make the newly released climate action plan successful. This Potluck with a Purpose will be part of this important community process. We will envision our town in the future with the Plan successfully implemented and create concrete actions for how to move needed changes from vision to reality.

There will be the usual delicious food, share table, asks and offers, community announcements, and general great feeling of working together on a great project.

Don't miss it!
