Dear Subscriber,
After three years of hard work by climate action coordinator Ross
Clark and many other City staff, the City of Santa Cruz has released its
draft Climate Action Plan.
Now it's time for the rest of us to step up and do what only a
community can do: make a good plan great. For my thoughts on why our efforts are crucial, click here.
The draft Plan
includes recommendations on how the City will reach its goal of 30%
reduction in greenhouses gases by 2020. The City will accept public
comment on the Plan for a limited time; this winter, the City Council will consider adopting a final version of the Plan.
Transition Santa Cruz will be holding a workshop for discussing and
giving feedback on the Plan...stay tuned for details. Meanwhile, contact us if you would like to be part of the TSC response to the plan. We'd love to hear from you. —Michael Levy

Celebrate Santa Cruz' B-day with us!
|
Saturday, October 9
7-9:30 pm
Louden Nelson Auditorium
$15 general, $10 under 16, students, seniors
Whoa! There's no City fireworks this October for the city's birthday? What to do?
Celebrate with Transition Santa Cruz, of course! This will truly be a Great Party. Featuring dance band Extra Large, and a wonderful array of local singer-songwriters singing songs about community (and especially about Santa Cruz), the evening will prove (again) how much fun it is to do Transition together.
We need volunteers, so if you are strapped for cash or just want to help, call Gail soon at 459-9248. Much more information on the website.

The Fruit Tree Project
|
Sunday, September 26
5 pm
Call for location
For anyone concerned with a shrinking economy and the need to build local resilience, it hurts to see neighborhood fruit trees drop their delicious baggage on the ground, only to rot.
That's where the Fruit Tree Project plans to make a difference. This new group will make use of surplus tree fruits, and help maintain and propagate fruit and nut trees. A volunteer collective is compiling a network of residents willing to share their bounty, which is offered at designated harvest times open to the community. Some harvests may include sessions for preserving or fermenting surplus.
Planning meetings are the last Sunday of every month at 5. To get on the list or for more information contact Steve by email or at 421-9367.

All eight City Council candidates plan to attend this forum, sponsored by several organizations, to respond to three questions about Santa Cruz water supply strategies. Many communities in the US have some form of exchange that can only be used in the local area. One of the best, Sonoma GoLocal, is an innovative program that uses principles of cooperative economics and financial sustainability to create a shift toward local commerce.
Fortunately, we have a local group ready to set up the GoLocal system here in Santa Cruz! You can hear all about it with Derek Huffington from Sonoma and Langdon Roberts from local group New Earth Exchange. More info here.

TSC teams with Red Cross on Neighborhood Resilience
We are very excited to announce that TSC and the Santa Cruz Chapter of the Red Cross are collaborating on Neighborhood Resilience Building.
Come join in and try out the Resilience Tool Kit to see how resilient your neighborhood is! We will meet in small groups of people from your area.
David Wright, the local Director of the Red Cross will tell us about their new innovative resilience program and how we can be involved.
And the working group will share some helpful tips for building community, which is the heart of resilience, right on your own block.
There will be the usual delicious food, share table, asks and offers, community announcements, and general great feeling of working together on a great project.
Don't miss it!
