Spiritual Self-Sabotage
CONCLUSION . . .
As a matter of fact, God even gives us a glimpse of what it is like to be in the throes of bitterness, with our sins being not forgiven!
Lamentations 3:1-19
I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.
He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.
Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.
My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.
He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.
He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.
He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.
Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.
He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.
He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.
He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he hath made me desolate.
He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.
I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day.
He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath made me drunken with wormwood.
He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes.
And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace: I forgat prosperity.
And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the Lord:
Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.
No one outside of ourselves can stop us from forgiving another person! No one else can make the choice for us to give or withhold forgiveness from another. No other person can create a heart of unforgiveness within us! It is all on us and on us alone!
If we lose our fellowship with God as our Father, there is no one else to blame except ourselves and the only way we can disrupt our fellowship with God as our Father is commit sins that will not be forgiven and there are only two ways that I know of that this can happen:
First, if we do not practice 1 John 1:9 - - “If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”
Second, if we refuse to forgive those who have sinned against us! And if that is the case, all the confession in the world as stated in 1 John1:9 won’t fix the situation because God has already told us that if we refuse to forgive others He will refuse to forgive us as well!
The only thing we can do in the second case is to repent and begin forgiving others in the same manner that we desire God to forgive us!
If we refuse to do this, the only thing remaining for us to have in life is BITTERNESS! And bitterness does but one thing … IT DEFILES EVERYTING IN OUR LIVES!
Hebrews 12:13-15
And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.
Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
First of all, God’s grace never fails but we can certainly fail God’s grace! Remember, grace is God’s divine influence upon our hearts that is revealed in life! We fail of God’s grace when we refuse to do that which God wants us to do, which He is influencing us to do - - in this case, to forgive others who have injured us!
Second of all, bitterness is at the opposite end of the spectrum from joy! In fact, “bitterness” is the Greek word “poison”! What does poison do? It weakens, makes sick and kills it’s victim! No wonder David cried out for the joy of God’s salvation to be restored unto him! So when we fail God’s grace (refuse to forgive in this case), the root of poison grows!
Here is the thing about roots: Roots take hold below the surface and roots grow downward so as to anchor the plant that shows above the surface! You can pull weeds all day long, but in the next few days they just come back again. Why? Because the root is still present and still feeding the growth of the weed!
Another thing about roots, the roots that are “fed” are the roots that will prevail, eventually strangling out the other roots thereby killing the plants on the surface!
The more we refuse to forgive others, the more we are feeding the root of bitterness and the stronger that root becomes, able to choke and strangle out the roots of holiness, peace, righteousness, joy, blessings, favor … need I continue?
As mentioned earlier, little else produces bitterness in a child than to be ignored by the parent! Yet we are the creators of our own bitterness when we refuse to forgive others who have somehow or other injured us!
Then pride rears up and we start thinking that we are entitled to God’s favor because after all, God is supposed to love us unconditionally! (Wonder where that thought came from?) And when it is apparent that we are not being loved by God as we once were, more bitterness takes root!
Pride also justifies why we don’t forgive someone else - - a myriad of reasons, excuses really, as to why we should not be required to forgive this person or that.
Then when things get really bad, pride tells us that we are being attacked by the devil! So we cry out to God for His intervention and …we don’t see God do what we expect!
Now this is important, the devil WILL attack us when we are in this condition because he knows that he has an advantage over you! But the thing is, it was not the devil who spiritually sabotaged your life - - he is only taking advantage of what you did to yourself!
The sabotage was self perpetrated! You are in a trap of your own devising! You and you alone have the key to freedom and restoration!
You have been taken captive by the devil at his will BECAUSE you opposed yourself to the Truth! You need to repent and acknowledge the truth of your situation and this will enable you to recover yourself out of the snare of the devil!
And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. 2 Timothy 2:24-26
Repent and start forgiving those who have trespassed against you!
Many Blessings!
