UCLA Licensee Orchard Therapeutics Raises $33M
Orchard Therapeutics recently launched with operations in London and the U.S. with a $33.4 million series A financing round led by F-Prime Capital. As part of its launch, the company also announced formal partnerships with UCLA and other institutions for the development of transformative gene therapies for serious and life-threatening orphan diseases. UCLA Startup BBI Seeks FDA Approval for Med Device
BBI, LLC, a developer of sensor-based diagnostic products, recently announced the initiation of a multi-center, pivotal clinical trial to evaluate performance of the SEM Scanner in detecting early-stage pressure ulcers. The start of the study brings BBI closer to an FDA review of the handheld scanner, which BBI expects to launch in the United States early in 2017. [

The LA startup ecosystem has grown tremendously over the last 5 years. We’ve seen an expansion of entrepreneurs, a growth in funding, and a multitude of incubators emerge throughout the region. An integral part of this growth, UCLA has worked in stride by nurturing an entrepreneurial spirit among its faculty, staff and student population.

UCLA faculty, staff and students are invited to enter the third annual “Code for the Mission’ competition to develop mobile applications promoting UCLA’s mission of education, research and service. Winners will earn placement of their app in UCLA’s App Store and a $5,000 prize in each of this year's three categories: Promoting Women in STEM; mHealth; and Community Engagement. [
