UUFSMA Newsletter January 7, 2019

The Mission of this Fellowship is to serve the spirit as each individual understands it; to serve the educational and pastoral needs of our own community; and to serve our multicultural community through actions that further social justice.

We had a capacity turnout yesterday for Rev. Tom Rosiello's first service as part-time Affiliate Minister. The children joined us to light the chalice and returned to their study room with lighted lanterns. Below is the Covenant that the congregation and Rev. Tom entered into.

President of the Fellowship, John Simsarian:

Today this Fellowship enters into a new relationship as we engage the services of our first ordained minister. The decision to seek the services of a part-time minister was made at the March 2017 Annual Meeting. The Board was instructed to appoint a committee to seek and review candidates for the position. Last fall, the committee recommended The Rev. Tom Rosiello to be our part-time Affiliate Minister. The Board unanimously accepted that recommendation and entered into an agreement with Tom. His part-time work with us officially began January 1, 2019. This being his first Sunday as our Affiliate Minister, we take this opportunity to enter into an understanding of our work together..

The Fellowship:

We - the members of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Miguel de Allende - welcome you, Tom Rosiello, as our Affiliate Minister and will support you and work with you in our shared ministry. We offer you a forum to speak the truth as best you understand it, to teach us about our religious tradition, to deepen us spiritually, and challenge us to apply the religious principles advanced by this faith tradition to our world, through our individual and group social justice work. Moreover, we ask you to select guest ministers who will do the same. We ask you to be a resource to our Care Team and Sunday Service Committee and we welcome your wisdom, experience, and advice to help make us an even better Fellowship.  We also acknowledge that this is a part-time position and we will strive with you to get the most benefit possible from the time you are available to us. We look forward to your representing us and promoting this Fellowship and our vision within our community and our UU denomination.

Affiliate Minister, The Rev. Tom Rosiello:

I am honored to be selected as your Affiliate Minister. I will work with you to the best of my ability and within the time constraints of this part time position, to preach sermons and lead worship services that inspire, educate, build community, and advance social justice. I will willingly share my experience and advice with appropriate committees and the Board and will represent this Fellowship and its vision within our denomination and in the SMA community. Finally, I will provide pastoral care when requested in times of loss or personal crisis.  I look forward to being a part of the shared ministry of this Fellowship.

Welcome to new members -

Janet Illeni, John Keating, Becky McKeown, Joanna Kafarowski. Please make yourself known to them during social time!

Events:

How Ageism Warps Our View of Long Life, Ashton Applewhite
Monday, January 7th, 5:00pm, La Casona

2019 is near, and what better way to ring in the New Year than with a forward-thinking conversation with a big thinker, Ashton Applewhite, author of This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism.

Hugely entertaining, Applewhite takes her sharply witty sword and systematically carves away at aging's myths and untruths.

There will be an informal reception with complimentary appetizers and beverages available for purchase following a Q&A.

Advance tickets $250 pesos online or at Tienda Tesoro at the Biblioteca. $300 pesos at the door.

Medical Planning

At 5:45pm, Wednesday, January 9th, Deborah Bickel and Sue Leonard from Be WellSan Miguel will lead another discussion on medical planning. This presentation will include a review of how to create a medical directive tht is legal in Mexico. The presentation will be in Sala Quetzal at the Biblioteca.

The presentation will also include a discussion on medical planning for our later years. Aging, of course, is a process that starts as soon as we are born, howevr, there comes a time when responding to that process takes up ore than its share of our lives. First things start happening all too fast and then, either for ourselves or for someone we love, aging and the debilitation that may come with it becomes all consuming. Join in a discussion of these issues and the resources that can make them more manageable. There will be a $150 peso fee.

Your Care Team wants to wish you a very Happy and Healthy Holiday Season!

If you need help during the holidays, do call us!  We will be here!

The Power of Words

Rev. Tom Rosiello

The Rev Tom Rosiello, UUFSMA’s new Affiliate Minister, speaks on “The Power of Words” at this Sunday’s Unitarian Universalist Fellowship service.

According to Rev. Rosiello, “the language we choose to use when expressing our ideas has a far greater effect upon others than we might realize. Similarly our thoughts and ideas are very often profoundly colored by the words others select to use. This is true at the level of one on one relationships but has even broader effect when it is broadcast to a large audience.”

Rev Rosiello reminds us that we are brought up to minimize the effects of language: “There is an old mantra that many of us used to recite as children when the neighborhood bully was teasing us… ‘Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.’ Sadly that is not true. Bullying has a profound negative effect on developing children and is closely linked to childhood suicide. But the powerful effects of language are certainly not limited to children. Think of what a different picture comes to mind when we call someone an ‘illegal alien’ as opposed to an ‘undocumented person’ or a ‘person lacking residence status.’”

“We live in a time of heightened rhetoric and it is having a profound effect on our personal lives and on the national world stage. Highly charged language and the failure to condemn hate speech is surely related to the dramatic increase in hate crimes over the last three years. Of course, language can equally have a profoundly positive effect, inspiring people to acts of great generosity and courage. Simply put, words have the potential to produce profound positive or negative consequences. As expressed in the ancient Book of Proverbs ‘Death and life are in the power of the tongue.’” (Prov.18: 21)

Rev. Rosiello reminds us that we all have a responsibility to use words carefully and accurately, and to challenge those whose words misrepresent the truth, degrade others, inspire hate or otherwise appeal to the worst of human nature.

The service also includes a special message for children relating to bullying and a time of coming together as a community in sharing and support of one another. Japanese shakuhachi flute player, Peter Ross, provides special music.

The UU Fellowship meets every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at La Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15 and welcomes people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
