UUFSMA Newsletter July 15, 2019

The Mission of this Fellowship is to serve the spirit as each individual understands it; to serve the educational and pastoral needs of our own community; and to serve our multicultural community through actions that further social justice.

Finance Committee Recruitment—Volunteers Needed

The Board is forming a working Finance Committee to review and advise on several
financial matters concerning our Fellowship. Among other things, this Committee will be
charged with researching and making recommendations as to the optimum size of our
operating reserve as well as what to do with funds that exceed that operating reserve. It
also will become acquainted with the Treasurer's job with an eye towards its
manageability and treasurer succession. The Committee should provide backup to theTreasurer and support by offering structure and clarity. It will recommend practical audit controls. The Board would like the Committee to review our budget and make
recommendations for the next fiscal year. Committee people can also serve as a resource
to members who have questions.

We are recruiting volunteers to work on this Committee. Volunteers should understand
basic financial management principles as it relates to our congregation (including our use
of duel currencies and cross-border banking) and be prepared to review and understand
our bookkeeping software and methods. Volunteers will delve into some of our
procedures in order to understand them and make recommendations. Volunteers need not be full time in SMA.

We want people who can apply a large dose of common sense to this charge, be willing
to put in some time, and be willing to engage in positive, collaborative discussions in the
process of making recommendations.

A Committee member will serve as the chairperson. The Treasurer will not chair the
committee but will participate and advise as needed. If you are interested in possibly
helping with this important Fellowship Committee, please contact Jane Wilkinson,
Treasurer, jane.wilkinson@gmail.com or John Simsarian, President,
jcsimsarian@yahoo.com.

Your Legacy of Love

Eli Hans and Joseph Bennett

Eli Hans and Joseph Bennett, collectively known as the Sublime Guys, invite you to expand your heart to bring more awareness of what truly matters in life at this Sunday’s Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Service.

“After the passing of my father last month,” says Eli, “it became clear to our family that what truly matters in this lifetime is the legacy we leave inside people, not what we leave for them. What we can leave behind upon our departure from this world is what we impart in people’s hearts: joyful memories, acts of kindness, loving expression, and deep connection. Beyond material things, what truly lives on is the degree to which we allow ourselves to share love with others. Yet, it’s important to remember that love is something precious that we must first give to ourselves. Not only in special circumstances, but as a way of life.

“As my father, Ben, used to say: ‘When confronted with a challenging decision, always ask yourself this question: What’s the most loving thing to do that will bring you the most peace of mind?’ It’s an act of love for yourself as well as others involved in the equation.”

The talk on Sunday explores the idea of living life from that perspective and offers helpful tools to facilitate forgiveness and step into a place of vulnerability to live our life with an open heart.

“If you’re someone who truly lives this way already,” says Bennett, “then please come and share your loving presence with everyone. If this idea is somewhat of a challenge for you, our time together could bring about some welcome shifts to create a more loving and self-expressed life. Participating in this experience can be very rewarding. Afterwards you’ll be able to reinforce the principles of ‘Your Legacy of Love’ as a community.”

Eli and Joseph are life and business coaches, motivational workshop leaders, and speakers ( SublimeGuys.com) who have been San Miguel residents for ten years.

Social Action

Last week before leaving for ABBA, the safe house in Celaya for migrants, I texted Pastor Ignacio and asked what he needed and what I should bring. He texted back, “frijoles y calcetas” - Beans and socks. With the numbers up and more families with young children, pantry basics get depleted quickly. If you can bring a bag of rice, beans, or socks to next Sunday's service, we could make an important and nutritious difference. Thanks to all for your continued support of ABBA House and the migrants.
Abrazos, Stan

Small Group Discussions

Topic: The Guantanamo Military Commission and Why They Have Failed.

Richard Kammen, a UUSMA member and part time resident of San Miguel, worked in the U.S. Military Commissions system for nearly ten years representing one of the major Guantanamo Defendants. This discussion will summarize and update a discussion that Rick led a couple of years ago.

Location: Rick’s home is in Colonia Guadiana, Gusdiana 19-1, which is just below the corner of Corner of Guadiana and Gorrion

Time: 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
