UUFSMA Newsletter November 16, 2020

The Mission of this Fellowship is to serve the spirit as each individual understands it; to serve the educational and pastoral needs of our own community; and to serve our multicultural community through actions that further social justice.

Photo Directory
In the Members Only section of the website, we now have a Member Directory with photos. If you want to know more about the fellowship members and see what they look like, below is a sampling of what a new member submitted.
Feldman, Ann (partner – Rich Feldman)

We are full time residents of San Miguel and became members a couple of months ago. We have been UUs for approximately eight years at the UU of Stow & Acton in Massachusetts.
I am a retired school administrator in the field of English learner education. Issues that most concern me are climate change and its impact on migration and quality of living, immigration and the treatment of migrants at the border, race relations and the recent upsurge in hate crimes and white supremacy and the pandemic and how it has impacted all of our lives.
My wish is that we continue to foster community support of those in need and bringing our social community together, along with attracting more diverse members
To have your profile in the Photo Directory of the website, please answer the questions below and send your responses with a photo to Denise at denise.uufsma@gmail.com.
Colonia you live in.
How many months do you spend in SMA or are you a full time resident?
If part time, where do you live when not in SMA?
How long have you been a member of the UUFSMA?
How long have you been a UU?
Write two or three sentences about yourself and what social justice issues concern you the most.
If you could make a wish come true for the UUFSMA, what would it be?
If you are a couple, do you wish to be listed separately?
Please send a head and shoulders photograph of yourself or yourself and your partner if you will be listed as a couple.

Update from your UU COVID-19 Taskforce

No matter where you are right now, the news about the Covid-19 pandemic is not very good. As economies open up, cases will increase -- it's inevitable.  We urge you to maintain, or better yet to strengthen your level of caution.

The urge to socialize is strong, but please remember: do it outdoors, keep distance at least 6 feet, keep your mask on, and wash your hands.
Eating at restaurants?  Not as safe as eating at home.
Visitors or workers in your home? Risky - be extra careful, keep masks on, and ventilate indoor spaces well.
Here is an excellent video about the science of masks and how they protect us:
Please, let's all stay committed to the thoughtful attention which keeps us and everyone else safe!

If you have any questions, please contact Bonney McDowell, member of the Task Force at miko789@gmail.com.

“What Is Your Place of Sanctuary?”

Paula Peace presents
Voices of the Fellowship

Departing from the customary format featuring a single guest speaker, this Sunday’s Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Thanksgiving Service will feature twenty members of the fellowship who will reflect on the question, “What is your place of sanctuary?” This will be the second annual Voices of the Fellowship in which thoughtful and adventurous members of the UU Fellowship share discoveries of refuge and renewal.

Alongside traditional concepts of “sanctuary,” a physical place of protection or a mental space for refocusing emotion, the service will explore the Spanish concept of “querencia” – a place where a person draws strength and expresses his or her most authentic self. Members will share their personal wellsprings of sanctuary and joy - in nature and the colorful kaleidoscope of
the outdoors, in peaceful walks and breaths of refreshing air, as well as from family, inspiring ancestors, and curious students in their classrooms.

Near the end of historically challenging 2020, Thanksgiving offers a chance to quiet fearful minds, put aside this year’s prolonged isolation, and share feelings of health and abundance. Many types of spiritual practice invite us during this pandemic to renew a sense of peace and gratitude and reflect on life’s daily gifts. This Sunday’s service will affirm ways to find sanctuaries, at once simple and profound, in the beauty of blue skies, snuggles with pets, the creativity of painting and writing, baking cookies, cultivating gardens, and tuning one’s soul to the exuberance of songbirds.

Amid these reflections, composers Felix Mendelssohn, Billy Joel, Ralph Vaughn Williams, and Bobby McFerrin will offer music from the heart -- and hymns of community celebration.

Pianist Paula Peace, chair of the Sunday Service Committee and active Unitarian Universalist of five decades, will coordinate the presentations. A former professional pianist and artistic director of the acclaimed Atlanta Chamber Players, Peace has performed hundreds of concerts, radio broadcasts, soirées, and educational programs for students and underserved

Due to the coronavirus, UUFSMA has suspended in-person Sunday services and other gatherings. A growing collection of previous online services can be found on the UUFSMA’s YouTube channel. If you would like to have a joy, sorrow, or concern shared during the service on Sunday,  please email it to me at tomrosiello@gmail.com and I will share it for you.

Social Action

The UUFSMA Social Action Committee solicits, reviews, and recommends funding for grant proposals from local Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) aimed at improving the quality of life for Mexicans living in and around San Miguel. In 2020 the UUFSMA provided financial support to 13 NGOs with over $54,000 in grants, representing more than half of the Fellowship’s annual budget. In addition, each quarter, the SAC and the Congregation help identify organizations with special, often one-time needs, for which the entire Sunday offering is given. We call these donations our “Blue Plate Specials”.

Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at 1:00 PM and all are welcome. For
additional information, please visit our webpage at http://www.uufsma.org/social-action.html and/or contact Committee Chair, Rebecca Langrall (rlangrall22@gmail.com).

What’s your legacy?
