UUFSMA Newsletter November 26, 2018

The Mission of this Fellowship is to serve the spirit as each individual understands it; to serve the educational and pastoral needs of our own community; and to serve our multicultural community through actions that further social justice.

Care Team

If you wish to experience peace, provide peace for another. If you wish to know that you are safe, cause another to know that they are safe. If you wish to better  understand seemingly incomprehensible things, help another to better understand. If you wish to heal your own sadness or anger, seek to heal the sadness or anger of another.
  - Dalai Lama

Hello from your UUFSMA Care Team!

if anyone would like to visit those who are currently homebound, please reach out to a Care Team member listed below to learn who is ready to have visitors.

Upcoming Event:

U.S. Medicare in Mexico -  a group discussion for UUs

U.S. Medicare will pay for some services in Mexico under certain conditions, but there are "rules" attached. What are they?   Are the rules different depending on whether you have Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplemental Plan?  Will the hospitals and doctors in Queretaro and San Miguel accept my Medicare card?  If I want to change my Medicare insurance plan when can I do it?  Do I need Medicare insurance?  Eileen Carafiol MSW,MBA, who worked for over 30 years in the Medicare health insurance industry, including years spent with the federal government agency which oversees Medicare, can help you with these questions.

Eileen will meet with us for a discussion and to answer questions after the Sunday service on December 2.  Eileen is not an insurance agent and will not be selling insurance.

Please let us know if you or someone you know needs help. The Care Team is here for you.
Meanwhile, take Care! While Francoise and Lydia Jane are out of town, please contact Chris Chase at 415-170-4544.

The hosts coordinate the event as to how many guests they can accommodate and who brings what food to share. As the groups change from cena to cena, it’s a wonderful opportunity to get to know other UUs.

Volunteerism: It’s Challenges
and Benefits

Jennifer Butz & Bill Dalsimer

Long-time social activist and attorney William Dalsimer and Jennifer Butz, an international consultant on good governance and environmental justice, examine the challenges and benefits of volunteerism at this Sunday’s Unitarian Universalist Fellowship service.

Bill will briefly trace the history of volunteerism in America, examine the reasons why UUs are so actively drawn to it, discuss some of his early heroes such as Dr. Albert Schweitzer, and of the many benefits and some of the dangers of service. He considers volunteerism a revolutionary act to fight for social justice, an act of love and compassion, and a tool of empowerment within a community. Researchers have shown that volunteering helps counteract the effects of stress, anger, depression, and anxiety and provide a sense of purpose and pride.

Bill and Jen are both life-long Unitarian Universalists who learned about volunteering as young children and have made it an integral part of their lives since. He joined the Peace Corps upon graduation from college in 1962 and taught English in the Ivory Coast of West Africa. Following graduation from the New York University School of Law, he entered practice in a federally funded program providing legal services in the South Bronx. He later directed a legal office of Mobilization for Youth on New York’s Lower East Side and, for many years designed union-sponsored legal benefit plans and directed law offices providing legal coverage for working men, women, and families.

Bill currently divides his time between New York and San Miguel and considers both his home. His volunteerism in San Miguel includes teaching English with a Feed the Hungry project in a rural school and hosting annual gatherings for returned Peace Corps volunteers living, visiting, or currently working in Mexico. He is also serves on the UUFSMA Sunday Service Committee, the Social Action Committee, and Board of Directors.

In her wide-ranging career, Jennifer has led, designed, and worked on development projects focused on strengthening civil society, building constructive relationships among local governments and citizens, and promoting rural and local economic development. She has been a volunteer for multiple SMA organizations and currently spends much of her time deeply involved in the creation and operation of Caminamos Juntos ( www.cjsma.org) that provides guidance and support to help Mexican nationals deported from the U.S. successfully adjust to life in Mexico.

The UU Fellowship meets every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at La Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15 and welcomes people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity. For information about our Children’s Sunday Program, contact us at chris.chase1955@gmail.com. Visitors are invited to attend the service and then join the UUs for hospitality and discussion afterwards. Wheelchair accessible. For additional information, visit our web site at uufsma.org.

Social Action

SMA’s Response to the Migrant Caravan:

Reports from the Front Line

Monday, November 26th at 4 pm at El Sindicato, Recreo 4

You are invited to a public forum where a panel of “caravan helpers,” including the coalition of local NGO’s and individuals who have been
providing emergency humanitarian assistance to the Central American
men, women, and children, will speak about their experiences. They will
answer your questions and hope to clear up misunderstandings about the
caravan. Learn where your donations went and how you can continue to
support these humanitarian efforts. Also, learn the reality of why people
have joined the caravan and what is happening now.

December 16 Collection

Eli Hans and Joseph Bennett and a host of volunteers have brought Christmas to the poorest of the poor - those scavenging for food and scraps at the dump - for the past ten years. Again this year they will be collecting food, water (1 gallon jugs or larger), gloves, hats, scarves, blankets, toiletries, vitamins, aspirin, condoms, cough syrup and non-battery operated toys. If you’d like to contribute, please bring your donations HERE on Sunday, December 16th. Thank you!

Welcome Table

At the Welcome Table we have, for your reading pleasure, the Community Connections brochure. It is filled with everything you ever wanted to know about the UUFSMA - a bit of history, events, who we are and what we do. Pick one up next Sunday.

Altar Flowers

Flowers are a lovely way to remember or honor someone dear to you. If you wish to have the Sunday flowers dedicated to someone special, please contact Cynthia Sterling at sterlingsilver33@gmail.com.
