UUFSMA Newsletter September 24, 2018

The Mission of this Fellowship is to serve the spirit as each individual understands it; to serve the educational and pastoral needs of our own community; and to serve our multicultural community through actions that further social justice.

Volunteer Profile

The Social Action Committee is ramping up for their busy time of the year. Every year about this time a Request for Proposal is sent out to non profit organizations in San Miguel who are interested in applying for a UUFSMA grant.

The applicant requirements are -
  • Should be a Registered Asociación Civil (not for profit status)
  • Community-based organization
  • Overseen by a representative Board of Directors
  • Demonstrates sustainability for the future
  • Demonstrates financial transparency and has the ability to produce annual financial statements
  • Can provide electronic recibos/facturas (recibo fiscal electrónico)
  • Has the ability to produce outcome/operational reports on the programs funded

The proposals are due on October 6th and as they arrive, members of the committee carefully check that each proposal submitted has fulfilled the criteria. After all of the proposals have been received, one committee member is assigned a proposal to review in detail and write a summary of their request. The committee then meets to review them together and decide on their recommendation to the Board.

In March 2019 when the Board sets the budget for the year, they review the SAC's recommendation and approve the grants. Their approval is based on availability of funds so the higher the budget, the more non profits we can assist with grants.

This year, 11 organizations have been sent a Request for Proposal:
Apoyo a Gente Emprendedora
Casita Linda
Caminos de Agua
Caminamos Juntos
Centro de Desarrollo Agropecuario (CEDESA)
Escuela de Educación Especial
Fundacion de Apoyo Infantil
Jóvenes Adelante
Mujeres en Cambio
Patronato Pro Niños
San Miguel Literary Sala

And, our hard working team is:
Dick Snyder, Chair, Jon Sievert, Cliff DuRand, Jane Wilkinson, Christie McGue, Bill Dalsimer, Sher Davidson, Bob Leonard, Betsy Davies, Rebecca Langrall, and Peter Podesta

Go team!

Care Team

Hello from your UUFSMA Care Team!

Last week the Care Team organized a workshop on “Managing Fear of Falling: Preventing Falls wit Awareness and Balance Training”  The workshop, organized by Lydia Jane Failing, was delivered by Cynthia Campbell, a Certified Fall Prevention and Balance Coach, and was sold out. During the two hour sessions (over two days) we learned a lot of important and useful information to help us stay safe and fit.  We will plan on offering this workshop again next year.

Our warmest wishes for a complete recovery goes to UUFSMA’s friend Elaine Smithsam who - after a bad fall - underwent knee surgery.  Louisa Field is taking care of Elaine in her home until Elaine’s daughter arrives, who will then organize care for her mother in her own home.  Elaine’s spirits are good but she would welcome hearing from you!  Her email is:  Smithsam@gmail.com

Please let us know if you or someone you know needs help.  The Care Team is here for you!
Meanwhile: Take Care!

Circle Cena - The Circle Cena is a social gathering for people who meet at a host's house once a month for either a pot luck of botanas and dessert or a full course dinner. The hosts coordinate the event as to how many guests they can accommodate and who brings what food to share. As the groups change from cena to cena, it’s a wonderful opportunity to get to know other UUs.

The next Circle Cena is Monday, November 5. Please sign up as host or guest at the Welcome Table after Sunday service or contact Arlena Lawrence,   lawrencearlena@yahoo.com.

Joy and Woe Are Woven Fine

Rev. Amanda Poppei

The Rev. Amanda Poppei explores the way our happiest moments are often intertwined with our saddest ones at this Sunday’s Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Service. How do we navigate the mixture of celebration and loss that life brings, and how do we not just accept, but welcome, both?

Looking at weddings, adoptions, and other major life milestones, Amanda discusses the reality that life isn’t simple. What brings us joy might bring another pain, and that kind of mutuality is inescapable. How do we reconcile all of that, knowing that we can’t make everyone happy? And how do we handle the way that our own lives often hold joy and pain at the same events (ever cry at a wedding? laugh at a funeral?). Life is so much more complicated than Hallmark cards would have us believe. Using (with permission) a very personal story from a family whom she has served in ministry, Amanda invites us all into reflection about the connections we have with each other and how those connections make us human.

Rev. Poppei has a Masters of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC and a BA in Religious Studies from Yale University. She was ordained as a UU minister in 2008 and accepted a call to serve as Senior Leader at the Washington Ethical Society (WES), a humanist congregation in Washington, DC. WES was founded in 1944 as part of the Ethical Culture movement begun in 1876 by Felix Adler to create something new to bring people of different beliefs together for action.

After beginning at WES, she completed a parallel process to become clergy in Ethical Culture (called a "Leader"). She enjoys her "dual affiliation" mirrored by WES itself, which became a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association in 2008. Amanda is also a co-founder of the Humanist Clergy Collaboratory, which brings together clergy serving humanists in many traditions--UU, Ethical Culture, Humanistic Judaism, and more--for fellowship and shared thought. She also currently serves as President of the UU Humanist Association, where she has a particular interest in lifting up the voices of women and people-of-color humanists and expanding our understanding of UU humanism. Rev. Poppei lives in Silver Spring, MD, with her husband, Peter Verchinski, an attorney at the Government Accountability Office, and their daughters Marcella and Joanna.

The UU Fellowship meets every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at La Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15 and welcomes people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity. For information about our Children’s Sunday Program, contact us at chris.chase1955@gmail.com. Visitors are invited to attend the service and then join the UUs for hospitality and discussion afterwards. Wheelchair accessible. For additional information, visit our web site at uufsma.org.

Caminamos Juntos, a SMA program that supports Mexican nationals who have been deported from the United States, is looking for a volunteer accountant to assist with administrative accounting. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact John Simsarian at  jcsimsarian@yahoo.com
