DOME DIGEST
November 9th, 2020
FIRST SERVE
There's a storm brewing. We've already had a preview of the cold weather that may be about to hit in earnest, but there's another tempest at the door. No, we don't have to worry about the White Walkers, it's the unseen Covid-19 enemy that's come back on the attack.

To start this newsletter off, we'd just like to offer this message:
Whatever your plans over the winter months, please do your part to keep yourself and others safe:
-Wash your hands
-Don't touch your face
-Avoid large social gatherings
-Wear a mask in public spaces
-Consider getting your flu shot
-Binge watch all the shows.

This issue covers a bit of spookiness from October, what's in store for November, and a little bit of how the new normal will play a role in the coming seasons.

Unfortunately we couldn't have our usual tournament day for Dome Club this year, but that didn't stop a few of our coaches from getting creative with their costumes. If you ever find a golden ticket and get to visit our Volleyball Factory, these are the characters you might happen upon.

Thanks to everyone who dressed up, but I think we can all agree the coach costume of the year goes to Androompa Loompa!
CANUCK AND JR CANUCK
Club volleyball will have a very different look and feel this year. The days of the large tournament (aka. super spreader event) are numbered. The big team atmosphere that Canuck and jr. Canuck have developed so well for each age group may also need to be trimmed for this season. But the play must go on!

As long as AHS deems it safe to do so, we will be putting the kids at both clubs first and foremost amongst our patrons. We've always had a youth first attitude at the Volleydome facilities, and keeping our homegrown club teams from Canuck and jr. Canuck active is our first priority.

Volleyball Alberta has recently asked all club teams to keep isolated within 12 person practice groups, and instead of tournaments, play a series of 4 team round robin events, with a minimum of 2 weeks in between each. This will certainly evolve along with the Covid-19 situation, and we will do our best to relay that information to kids and parents of the club programs run out of our facilities. Your best bet will be to follow the updates on their websites found just below.

This could affect both clubs hopes to keep big group training model going for this season. But we are confident that we and the club heads will figure out the best solution for the 180+ athletes at Canuck and 240+ jr. Canuck players. To those kids and parents who are worried about what that means for the season, know that the clubs are doing their best to give the most possible kids, the best possible experience, in a safe and competitive environment for the 2020/21 season.

We've seen how much club volleyball means to the many thousands of kids that have come through our clubs, a large percentage of which have gone on to have successful post-secondary volleyball careers. Seeing athletes succeed is what keeps us passionate about helping these clubs remain at the highest caliber. You can feel confident that if anyone can make the most of this year's limitations, it will be the Canuck and jr. Canuck club programs.

WINTER DOME CLUB
As always, and especially with this year's limited space, our Dome Club programs at the Volleydome GYM have been filling quickly. As of this writing there is still a bit of space left for the DC1/DC2 group (born 2004/05), and only a few spots left for boys born between 2006-09, which will likely go soon.
To Register for those final few spots CLICK HERE
To be added to the waitlist for any DC group email us at info@volleydome.net

Meanwhile Dome Club Beach running out of the original Volleydome location is also filling, and will likely only have spots available for a few more weeks. It will run during the same time frame as the indoor Dome Club program, with the same core values of learning the skills and getting to compete and have fun, the difference being it will be held on the indoor sand under the bubble instead of on the GYM floor.

For those youngest kids who are most new to the sport, Mini Dome Club and Mini Dome Club Beach both still have availability. Emphasis on learning the skills and on having fun. These are the best programs to learn the game from scratch.

NBVL

In January 2020, the National Beach Volleyball League came to Calgary, and our very own Dome Defenders represented well, finishing 2nd in the NBVL Calgary, led by season MVP and Dome coach extraordinaire, Camille Saxton.

The 2021 season will be even more exciting for Volleydome fans, as we will now be hosting NBVL Matchups, Sunday nights starting in January, at our Original location (2825 24th Ave NW). Though spectators are still frowned upon, you'll be able to follow along and see Camille, the Defenders and the Bubble in action via NBVL.ca all season long.

If you know any athletes that want a chance to compete with Calgary's best beach volleyball athletes, registration is still open to anyone until November 14th on the website.

Find out who the Dome Defenders select to their team during the online NBVL Draft on November 22nd, 2020.

MATCH POINT
The best volleyball players are the one's who are able to adapt the quickest to changing situations while they compete. 2020 has certainly been a great year in terms of learning to adapt, I can only imagine how amazing all the volleyball players will be once things eventually go back to normal. We hope you're enjoying the Dome Digest, apologies for this later than normal November issue. Check out next month issue for our plans over the Holidays.

We're still looking for more of your Dome memories. If you've got a story to share please send an email to info@volleydome.net with the subject lin "Dome Story" . Likewise you can also send any suggestions for future issues to the same address.

There's no place like Dome!
