Greetings!

We hope this newsletter finds you doing well and enjoying a fantastic winter.  The snow is falling in the Jackson Hole / Teton Valley area, and we are gearing up for another wonderful summer fishing season.  Currently our area has experienced more snow than other areas, some of the most in the country to be exact.  After two huge snow pack winters, we are looking forward to a "normal" spring run off and getting on the water early this spring fishing season.  Fishing opportunities have been limited this winter; however, the lower Henry's Fork should start to turn on in the next couple of weeks!  We will keep you posted with any updates in fishing conditions via our fishing reports webpage as well as the WorldCast Anglers fly fishing blog.

Late winter brings the arrival of more fishing opportunities on our local watersheds.  Ice jams and shelves will begin to break free on mild days and the Midges, Baetis and Capnia Stoneflies will become more active and prolific.  Nymphing will remain the best method to target mid-winter fish, but don't be surprised to see a couple trout feeding on top.  Tossing streamers for Lake Trout caught below Jackson Lake Dam can also provide some great action and create a much needed break from the winter cabin fever.  Once again we thank you for choosing WorldCast Anglers for your fly fishing adventures and needs!  As always, stop by any of our locations, give us a call (800.654.0676) or send us an email if you have any questions about our trip offerings, fly fishing equipment or general fly fishing needs.  Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you soon!

We have water and plenty of it!!!!!!

While the Rocky Mountain West has seen limited snow fall through this winter, Teton Valley and the Jackson Hole area have been blessed with over 300 total inches of snow.  In fact, that is more than most other major areas of the Rocky Mountain West.  Currently our area is sitting around the 60-65 percent of average mark, and the wettest months of winter are soon to arrive.  Don't despair; there is still plenty of more snow and rain to fall from the sky.

What does all this mean?  Why is this snow important to fly fishing?  This snow pack feeds our streams, rivers and reservoirs and provides us with the cool and clean water that trout need to survive.  Currently there is 30% more water in American Falls Reservoir and 60% more water in Palisades Reservoir than there was on this date in 2005!  This information can be found at Bureau of Reclamation.  We have all this water thanks to
the massive snow packs that we have received in the past two winters.  If winter precipitation stopped today, we would have enough water to experience normal summer flows.  All this information correlates to a potentially earlier start to our fishing season as well as a nice consistent summer full of epic hatches, healthy and stable river flows and lots of hungry fish, so don't miss out on the early season opportunities as well the incredible summer of fishing we are going to experience this year!
Awesome Early Season Fishing Adventures!!
Just because there is snow on the ground, doesn't mean you have to store the fishing gear for the winter.  To be honest, we can have some phenomenal fly fishing days during the winter and spring months.  Some of these days can even offer awesome dry fly fishing when conditions are right.  Imagine the same river you love to fish, void of the summer crowds and traffic.  Remember, the traffic has left but the fish still remain.  There are winter closures on certain rivers and streams, so please check with one of our offices before you head out.  Also, don't forget to purchase your 2010 Wyoming or Idaho Fishing License.

Mongolian Taimen Fever!!!

WorldCast Anglers President, Mike Dawes, traveled across the world to experience some of the greatest trout fishing on the planet.  Below is an excerpt from his Mongolian travels: "The site of a 40 inch taimen coming to annihilate a mouse pattern is a site so addictive it will forever be etched in my mind.  As I floated down the upper Onon River in Northern Mongolia, I promised to myself that if I ever came back, I would do more trout fishing, as the little that I had seen could possibly be the best trout fishing in the world.  Size 4-10 large foam flies, 1x tippet, fishing banks from the boat, and trout averaging between 18 -24 inches (largest trout in the week was a 28 inch Amur trout).  On the journey home I remember continually asking myself the same question, “Why had I not done more trout fishing?”  The answer was simple; I had the “Taimen Fever.”  I was so set on getting another visual take from this monstrous fish that I tuned everything else out and just focused on getting my fix.  A week later the trip was over and I was wondering what had happened, slowly recovering from the fever and regaining my bearings.

In 2009, I had the chance to return to the Onon River, and vowed only to get the fever in small doses, maximize the trout fishing opportunities and immerse myself in the surroundings.  I did just that and can honestly say that the trout fishing in Mongolia ranks as some of the best trout fishing in the world, not to mention the opportunity of picking up the 8wt and targeting a 40-50 inch Taimen on a dry fly, all while floating through a region where time has stood still."  For the 2010 season, WCA will be hosting our third trip to the Onon River with Mongolia River Outfitters, to learn more details please email Mike Dawes or call our office at 1-800-654-0676.
