Ulrike Ottinger: Photographer and Filmmaker
3/F Bridgeway Gallery
April 11 - May 10, 2013

Yuchengco Museum is the host of a traveling exhibit from Germany that pays tribute to one of its most headstrong filmmakers, Ulrike Ottinger. The exhibit features Ottinger's large-scale photographs, as well as her latest film Under Snow (2011).

Ulrike Ottinger features large-scale photographs by the German photographer and filmmaker, which were mostly created parallel to her films. Ottinger’s body of work transcends artistic disciplines, from photography to filmmaking.

Ulrike Ottinger studied etching techniques and attended lectures on art history, religious studies, and ethnology in Paris. She was born in Konstanz, Germany in 1942, and lived as a painter and photographer from 1961 to 1969 in Paris, where she also developed her first script. She returned to Germany in 1969, where she founded the film club “Visuell” in cooperation with the Film Seminar at the University of Konstanz and directed the club until 1972. She has been living in Berlin since 1973.

Ulrike Ottinger Film Screenings
Under Snow
Ulrike Ottinger, 2011
1 hr 45 mins
Screened Monday - Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

In Echigo, Japan, the snow lies several feet deep, covering landscape and villages. Over the centuries, the inhabitants have organized their lives accordingly. To record their distinctive forms of everyday life, Ottinger journeyed to the mythical snow country with two Kabuki performers. Kabuki, poetry, and the reality of Snow Country combine with the Yumiko Tanaka's music to make a visually striking and moving film.

Ulrike Ottinger: Nomad from the Lake
Brigitte Kramer, 2012
1 hr 26 mins
Screened Monday - Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Ulrike Ottinger's cinematic universe has influenced entire generations. It all began on the shores of Lake Constance, where Ulrike Ottinger was born and where she still often spends time. Filmmaker Brigitte Kramer begins her documentary on Ottinger’s life and work at Lake Constance, since she too shares the icon’s birthplace and a great love of these waters.

Groups of at least five persons can book a special screening during their museum visit. For details, call 889-1234 or email info@yuchengcomuseum.org.
