Klunkerz Screening,
September4 - Film Night in the Park
Come early with a picnic dinner
to San Anselmo’s Creek Park on Friday, Sept. 4.
Watch Klunkerz – a film by Billy Savage tracing the history of
modern-day mountain biking –
presented by Film Night in the Park and co-hosted
by MCBC and Team Hamana. The film starts
at 8:00 PM. Suggested donations are $6 for adults and $3 for children.
In the 1970s,
some Marin free thinkers began riding fat tire cruisers (circa1930-50s) fast
down steep dirt fire roads on and around Mt.Tamalpais,
eventually cobbling together a hybrid with gears to tackle the uphill. Because
these bikes were mostly recycled from the discard bin and had a propensity to
rattle (or look the part), the riders affectionately referred to them as their
“clunkers.” Producer Bill Savage illustrates his story with the joyful memories
of those present at the birth: Joe Breeze, Gary Fisher, Charlie Kelly, Otis
Guy, Wende Cragg, Tom Ritchey, and plenty of others. Savage even tracked down
former members of the pioneering Morrow Dirt Club, who blew everyone¹s minds
and then disappeared for 20 years.

Marin Municipal Water District's
watershed protection staff will host an open house at the Sky Oaks watershed
headquarters from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 9 to share information about a new habitat
protection program called "Project Restore."The program aims to address problems
caused by unofficial trails on the watershed. There are more than 53 miles of
unofficial trails that degrade habitat, provide pathways for invasive weeds,
increase erosion and present a public safety hazard, officials said.
Sky Oaks watershed headquarters is at 49
Sky Oaks Road in Fairfax. People who plan to attend should RSVP by Sept. 3 to
volunteerprogram@marinwater.org or call 945-1169.

Trail Work on the Olema Valley Trail- Saturday, Sept 26th
“Hikers, bikers and
equestrians come together!”
SHARE THE TRAIL, working with Point Reyes National Seashore’s Adopt A
Trail program, announce a trail work day and
picnic on Saturday, September 26.
Share the Trail, a coalition of user groups
working to make Marin trails more accessible and safe for everyone, is
organizing a trail day and picnic at the Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin
County. Hikers, bikers and equestrians will be working side by side to make
some much-needed improvements to the Olema Valley Trail, one of the few
multi-use trails in the park. These improvements will increase the longevity of
the trail, preserving the trail for future generations. The Subaru/IMBA Trail
Care Crew will help with the project and will offer a trail building School,
teaching sustainable trail design. There will be a picnic following the trail
work with great local food and beverages, including hamburgers and sausages
from Marin Sun Farms!
WHERE: Meet at the Pacific
Coast Science and Learning Center on Hwy 1 about 2 miles south of Five Brooks
trailhead, midway between Olema and Bolinas
RSVP & QUESTTIONS: - tomboss@mac.com
or 415-272-2756
ABOUT THE TRAIL: The Olema Valley
Trail meanders along the Olema Rift Zone, created by the San Andreas Fault. The
San Andreas Fault runs through Bolinas Lagoon, the Olema Valley and up through
Tomales Bay. In fact, the epicenter of the 1906 Great Earthquake was near
Olema. As a result of seismic activity, the Olema Rift Zone features a very
unique hydrology or drainage pattern. For about a mile in the Olema Valley, two
creeks parallel each other and flow in opposite directions to the Pacific
Ocean. Pine Gulch creek flows south and empties into Bolinas Lagoon, while
Olema Creek flows north and drains into Tomales Bay. This is just one of the
many wonders that await you along the Olema Valley Trail. - Stephen Bryne
Hope to see you at all of these great events. Thanks for taking the time to be active!
