Klunkerz Screening, September 4 - Film Night in the Park

Come early with a picnic dinner to San Anselmo’s Creek Park on Friday, Sept. 4. Watch Klunkerz – a film by Billy Savage tracing the history of modern-day mountain biking –

presented by Film Night in the Park and co-hosted by MCBC and Team Hamana. The film starts at 8:00 PM. Suggested donations are $6 for adults and $3 for children.

In the 1970s, some Marin free thinkers began riding fat tire cruisers (circa1930-50s) fast down steep dirt fire roads on and around Mt. Tamalpais, eventually cobbling together a hybrid with gears to tackle the uphill. Because these bikes were mostly recycled from the discard bin and had a propensity to rattle (or look the part), the riders affectionately referred to them as their “clunkers.” Producer Bill Savage illustrates his story with the joyful memories of those present at the birth: Joe Breeze, Gary Fisher, Charlie Kelly, Otis Guy, Wende Cragg, Tom Ritchey, and plenty of others. Savage even tracked down former members of the pioneering Morrow Dirt Club, who blew everyone¹s minds and then disappeared for 20 years.

Get a discount on the Ridge Trail Council’s 4th annual Ridge Trail Cruz

Saturday, Sept 12, Sanborn County Park in the Santa Cruz Mountains

The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council's 4th Annual Ridge Trail Cruz, on Saturday September 12, offers cyclists a unique opportunity for a "preview Cruz" of the Ridge Trail in Sanborn County Park, as part of this one-day special permit event before the park’s official opening to mountain bikes.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council. Event fee includes a shuttle for bicyclists (and bike) from the staging area to the start of the ride, rest stops, lunch, maps, ride guides & sweeps (you ride at your own pace).

The Bay Area Ridge Trail will be a 550+ mile trail on the ridgetops circling San Francisco Bay, open to hikers, cyclists & equestrians. Currently, there are over 318 miles of trail open to the public, of which ~85 percent are open to cyclists. The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council is the nonprofit organization that plans, acquires, builds, maintains, and promotes the Ridge Trail.

The Council partially funded the Master Plan for Sanborn County Park, which has recently been approved, and when implemented, will open trails throughout the Park to cyclists, including the Ridge Trail which is to be extended.  Santa Clara County Parks, with the Council, the Trail Center and REI, has hosted a number of volunteer work days to bring the Ridge Trail in the park up to their multi-use standards. To highlight these efforts, and to support the Council, County Parks has granted this special one-day bicyclist access. You must be registered for the Cruz to ride in the park this day. The County Parks Department will officially open the park to mountain bicycling uses once the Department completes the required improvements to the trails system at the park.

In support of the work that Access4Bikes is doing, they are offering A4B members a discount of $10, use discount code "Access4Bikes" when you register for the ride. To register or for more information, visit: http://ridgetrail.org/about/news_detail.cfm?id=171

Trail Work on the Olema Valley Trail - Saturday, Sept 26th

“Hikers, bikers and equestrians come together!”

SHARE THE TRAIL, working with Point Reyes National Seashore’s Adopt A Trail program, announce a trail work day and picnic on Saturday, September 26.

Share the Trail, a coalition of user groups working to make Marin trails more accessible and safe for everyone, is organizing a trail day and picnic at the Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County. Hikers, bikers and equestrians will be working side by side to make some much-needed improvements to the Olema Valley Trail, one of the few multi-use trails in the park. These improvements will increase the longevity of the trail, preserving the trail for future generations. The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew will help with the project and will offer a trail building School, teaching sustainable trail design. There will be a picnic following the trail work with great local food and beverages, including hamburgers and sausages from Marin Sun Farms!

WHERE: Meet at the Pacific Coast Science and Learning Center on Hwy 1 about 2 miles south of Five Brooks trailhead, midway between Olema and Bolinas

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 26 - Trail work: 10 am - 2 pm  Picnic: 2:30 pm - 5 pm

RSVP & QUESTTIONS: - tomboss@mac.com or 415-272-2756

ABOUT THE TRAIL: The Olema Valley Trail meanders along the Olema Rift Zone, created by the San Andreas Fault. The San Andreas Fault runs through Bolinas Lagoon, the Olema Valley and up through Tomales Bay. In fact, the epicenter of the 1906 Great Earthquake was near Olema. As a result of seismic activity, the Olema Rift Zone features a very unique hydrology or drainage pattern. For about a mile in the Olema Valley, two creeks parallel each other and flow in opposite directions to the Pacific Ocean. Pine Gulch creek flows south and empties into Bolinas Lagoon, while Olema Creek flows north and drains into Tomales Bay. This is just one of the many wonders that await you along the Olema Valley Trail.

Hope to see you at all of these great events.  Thanks for taking the time to be active!
