Improving Outcomes for AV Fistulas

On November 11 at 12 noon, the Florida Hospital Collaborative will be hosting a webinar entitled "Improving Outcomes for AV Fistulas."  


Fistula First Breakthrough Initiative (FFBI) clinical consultants, Dr. Jay Wish of the University Hospital Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and Dr. Michael Lilly of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Maryland, will be the featured speakers. Included will be a discussion on the recently released FFBI Strategic Plan.

According to an article recently released by FMQAI, "compelling indications for angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) use in hypertension include diabetes, chronic kidney disease (CKD), heart failure, recurrent stroke prevention, post-myocardial infarction and high coronary disease risk."

 On the Forefront:  End of Life Issues for Seniors

According to an article in NephrOnline, "'older Americans living in nursing homes experience a significant decline in their ability to perform simple daily tasks such as feeding themselves, getting dressed or brushing their teeth after starting dialysis,' say researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine."


The discussion on how to approach the decision of dialysis initiation for elderly patients is addressed in the article, "Suffering Caused by Dialysis for Nursing Home Seniors May Outweigh Its Benefits."  The study suggests that we need to look deeper at quality of life issues going forward.

 

New Hemodialysis Access Device For Catheter-Dependent Patients

According to an article published in July 2009 in the Journal of Vascular Surgery,
"The effects of a new long-term subcutaneous vascular access device were studied in access-challenged patients who were poor candidates for fistulas or grafts due to venous obstruction. Bacteremia rates, patency, and function of the Hemodialysis Reliable Outflow (HeRO) Vascular Access Device (Hemosphere Inc, Minneapolis, Minn) were evaluated."
