Clinical Labs Report Additional Data to Aid in Detecting Kidney Disease

The American Clinical Laboratory Association (ACLA), which represents approximately 70% of independent laboratory services throughout the U.S., made a recommendation in May that its members voluntarily calculate an eGFR and report this additional information when doctors order a serum creatinine.

According to the news release by ACLA, six states now mandate that clinical laboratories report eGFR when creatinine is ordered.  These states include Louisiana, Michigan, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Tennessee.

Use of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers in Chronic Kidney Disease

According to an article recently released by FMQAI, "There are currently more than 26 million American adults living with CKD, a number that continues to rise"(National Kidney Foundation.) A substantial and growing body of evidence has been published confirming the importance of either an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) or an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) in the treatment or prevention of a number of disease states. Both classes of drugs have been shown to slow the progression of kidney disease by significantly reducing proteinuria, delaying transition from micro- to macroalbuminuria and slowing the decline in glomerular filtration rate American Journal of Kidney Disease.)
