The Time For Action is NOW! November -- Diabetes Awareness Month
Chronic kidney disease and diabetes are a deadly combination. Those of us working to prevent these diseases can reinforce KEY messages:
1. Control diabetes.
2. Control hypertension.
3. Get necessary tests.
4. Know the numbers.
The American Diabetes Association and the K/DOQI guidelines have the same recommendation: Microalbumin screening on all patients at risk for CKD.

Hats off to these and ALL our members for all the work they do within their organizations and their communities!
Pauline Lowe- Program Director for the American Diabetes Association
Rita Diaz-Kinney- CDC, Division of Diabetes Translation
Trina Thompson- Administrator for the Florida Department of Health-Diabetes Prevention and Control Program

New For the Future: New Diabetes Risk Score Will Help Identify High Risk Patients
According to an article published in
Medical News Today, March 19, 2009, a simple new score for predicting the risk of type 2 diabetes could be used to identify people at high risk of diabetes and proactively intervene before they develop the disease, concluded a large study published on bmj.com.
The score uses information that is available in electronic health records, or which patients themselves would be likely to know, and does not require laboratory tests, so it can be used in routine clinical practice, by national screening programs, and by the public (http://www.qdscore.org).
