「無い物は作るが如し」

 

私の父親は鮨屋を営んでいる。

それ故に、

自宅兼作業場があるガレージには業務用の設備があるのだが、

その中にアワビ用の水槽（と言うより生簀に近い）がある。

 

水槽といってもプラスチック製の比較的大きなコンテナの入れ物に単にアワビを放しているだけの代物だ。

安いタイミングで生きたままのアワビを購入し、

ネタとして使うまで生かしておく。

 

水槽用クーラーを接続していて水温を16度（※1）に設定しているため、

この季節になると結露が甚だしい上に、濾過機能もないので頻繁に海水の入れ替えが必要になる手間の掛かる生簀と言わざるをえない。

 

キャンプ用のポリタンク数十本を用意し、乗用車のトランクをビシャビシャにしながら市場で提供している清浄海水を定期的に分けてもらっているそうだが、

20kg以上ある海水の入ったタンクをいつもしんどそうに扱っている年老いた父親を見て、

私はそれを一切手伝う訳ではなく（ひどい…）、

ものづくりで解決する事を試みた。

 

我が石巻工房には、

“放課後クラブ”と呼ばれる時間があり、

終業後にスタッフは工房の設備や端材を自由に使い、ものづくりが出来る環境を提供している。

思い付いたアイデアや市販されていないアイテム、自分なりに使い勝手の良い家具の製作や改良などが手軽に即興で作れるのだ。

対外的にはこれを独自の福利厚生と勝手に位置付けたりしているが、

思い立った時に即座に何かを作れる環境は、

ものづくりが好きな人間にとってはとても有り難い環境だと言える。

 

水槽製作の話に戻ろう。

ネットの海に漕ぎ出し、先人達の苦労に学び、いいとこ取りのちょっとスゴイ水槽を製作すべく、構想を練る。

工房の一角を間借りした水槽製作が始まり、

結果、大量の塩ビ管を含む資材があふれ、

「これなんに使うんスカ？(ジャマなんですけど...)」と言われ、

得意満面に、

「この塩ビ管をこんな感じで加工してさぁ～」などと話す様は、

さながら夏休みの工作を作っている小学生のそれと同じだ。

 

今回、私が製作したのは、

オーバーフロー方式の水槽システム。

濾過装置には、ヤクルト容器と枕の中身に使われるパイプを使ったいわば実験的濾過になるのだが、

過去の経験から、多孔質セラミックや大磯石などの濾材よりも遥かに取り扱いが容易で効果が高いことは実証済みだ。

加えて、半自動の給排水システムの構築と水槽と濾過層、通水経路には結露対策も施した。

これで水換えが劇的に楽になる...はず。

 

ところで、

工房には30代の製作スタッフが2人いる。

前職ではフラッシュ家具を主に製作してきた、私を除いて工房唯一の家族持ちS君と、

建具製作で20年の経験積んだK君。

 

無垢材を主に用いた工房家具であるが、

時よりお客さんからの特注注文が入った時など、

技術的見地に基づいた製造方法や見積もり作成、取り付けに至る指導などで前職の経験を活かしてもらっている。

先日、

女子スタッフの会話から、

彼らは「フラッシュ王子」、「建具王子」と呼ばれていることを聞きつけ、

「そんなら俺は『塩ビ管王子』だな（ピッシャ）」と会話に加わったところ、

事務所に邪魔な塩ビ管が放置されていた事も相まって、

「千葉さんは『塩ビ管おじさん』ですよっ」と一蹴されてしまった。

だが、

この「塩ビ管おじさん...」なかなかいい響きではないか！

 

ものづくりといえば、

この8月にあのカリモクとのコラボ企画「石巻工房 by Karimoku」のローンチイベントが開催される。

石巻工房で作られているデザインプロダクトをカリモクがアレンジしたらどうなるのか？

という、芦沢と知多カリモクの副社長加藤氏が共謀?（笑）して進めていたプロジェクトが満を持して世に放たれる。

里山から切り出された、

虫食い跡や迫力ある節付きの個性的な材を使い、決して表に現れない部材として用いられる材を活かし、「カリモクならこう作る」的なプロダクトになるだろう。

 

石巻工房のプロダクトがクロムモリブデン鋼製フレームのクロスバイクならば、

カリモクが手掛けるそれは、カーボンファイバー製のクロスバイクだとも言えよう。

マテリアルが違うだけで、プロダクトが発するメッセージは大きく異なるのである。

これは、

芦沢の言う「家具とは何か？」を考えさせるプロジェクトでもある。

 

今回のコラムタイトルの通り、

無い物だからこそ作るというのは一種の知的好奇心の現れであり、

有るものにアレンジを加えて見せ方を変えるというのも人類の進化的思考の現れなのだ。（※2）

 

さて、

塩ビ管おじさんの頭の中では次なる計画、

「ダウンドラフト型プロテインスキーマー（泡沫分離装置）」の設計図が出来上がりつつある。

過去に何度か試したことがあるのだが、これが中々難しい。

もちろん、市販されているものではあるので買えば良いだけの話ではあるが、

非常に高額だ。

何より自作するって楽しくないですか？

 

 

これが、

おじさんのせめてもの親孝行になる事を願う。(※3)

 

 

※1:アワビは海水温20度前後の環境を好み、12度前後になるとほとんど動かず、それ以下だと半仮死状態となる。海水温が16度というのは絶妙な水温であり、これ以上水温を上げるとアワビが活発になり代謝量が上がるため閉塞的な水槽内では水質は急速に悪化してしまう。

また、16度よりも低い水温に設定するためにはそれ相当の設備が必要になるため、経済性が宜しくない。

 

※2：一家具業界の問題を人類の問題にちゃっかりすり変えてしまうのは、

このコラムの啓蒙活動の一環とも言える。

すり替えるというのも...

 

 

“Make the things you lack” 

 

My father runs a sushi restaurant.

For that reason, our garage at home is host to miscellaneous equipment/facilities related to the restaurant. 

Among those is a fish tank for holding abalone. 

 

Well, I call it a fish tank but in reality it’s more like a large plastic container made just to hold the abalone. 

When we can purchase abalone cheaply, we keep them alive in the tank to use as a nigiri sushi topping in the restaurant.  

 

A cooling system is attached to the tank to keep the water temperature at 16 degrees Celsius (※1). In the summer, besides the issue of condensation accumulating, because we don’t have a filtration system in place we frequently have to change out the seawater… truly a laborious process. 

 

Seeing my father struggle with taking a large load of plastic jugs in the back of his trunk to the fish market at regular intervals to fill them up with over 20kg of seawater at a time, I decided to try using my DIY skills to solve this issue (not fully in the spirit of helping him, however). 

 

At Ishinomaki Lab, 

we have what we refer to as an “after school club” time in which staff can use the facilities and wood offcuts freely in a DIY-friendly environment. 

We can make anything that comes to mind, like products not meant for sale, things we want to make or repair for our own homes - a range of improvised making. 

From the outside looking in this might just seem like just a neat company benefit,

but an environment where you can make what you’re thinking about on the spot is something that people who enjoy DIY can truly appreciate. 

 

Back to the fish tank story. 

I began rowing in the waters of the great Internet, studying the struggles of my predecessors and learning what it takes to make a great water tank, refining a plan in my mind. 

I took up a table in our workshop and began to work. It involved the use of a significant amount of PVC pipes, such that you would think “THIS many? So troublesome”. 

In a boastful way, saying “Look at how I’ve managed to use the PVC!” is just like how a child might boast about a project made over their summer vacation. 

 

This time I have made an overflow type water tank system. For the filtration system, I experimented with using empty Yakult [yogurt drink] containers and the small pipe-shaped plastic pieces often used in Japanese pillows.

From a previous experience, I already knew that it would be much easier to handle and more effective than a filter made of porous ceramic material or seaside rocks. 

I constructed a semi-automatic water supply and drainage system, water tank filtration layer, a path for the water flow, and a strategy to address the condensation build-up issue.

With that, changing out the water should be significantly easier… supposedly. 

 

By the way,

We have two craftsmen in their 30s, Mr. S who in his previous job specialized in flush* woodworking (and besides myself, is the only other married staff member with kids), and Mr. K, a craftsmen who specialized in tategu furniture with fittings such as sliding doors and windows for 20 years. 

*Editor’s note: Woodworking technique using a hollow core with frame structure (vs solid core). Can be tiered, lattice, honeycomb, etc. Results in lightweight, durable products and is less expensive material-wise, but takes expert knowledge to know how to join the surface and core structure.

 

While Ishinomaki Lab mainly uses solid wood for its products, sometimes we have orders for customized pieces. When we are considering the technical specifications for manufacturing, drafting an estimate, or considering the product’s installation, we may rely on the past experiences of our staff for guidance. 

The other day,

One of the female staff members said the two craftsmen were the “Flush Prince” and “ Tategu Prince”.

Hearing that, I inserted myself in the conversation and said “If that’s so, then I’m the PVC Pipe Prince!”.

With the mess of PVC pipes strewn all over our workshop in mind, she shot back “More like Chiba-san is just the PVC Pipe Guy”. 

But,

“PVC Pipe Guy” sort of has a nice sound to it, don’t you think? 

 

Back to discussing craftsmanship,

In August we will be launching a collaborative brand with Karimoku, “Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku”. 

Talks began when Keiji Ashizawa (founder of Ishinomaki Lab) and Karimoku Vice President Hiroshi Kato wondered what it would be like if Ishinomaki Lab designs were manufactured in the Karimoku way - now, the brand is becoming a reality.

Making use of timber from Japan’s satoyama lands and other areas that have been bitten by insects, have prominent knots, or other sort of unique marks and traits, the new products are ones that only Karimoku could bring to life. 

 

If Ishinomaki Lab’s products are like a chromium molybdenum cross bike, Karimoku’s are like ones made with carbon fiber. With not only differing materials, the messages conveyed by the products also have different nuances. 

These are products that would make you ponder a question Keiji always asks: “What is furniture?” 

 

Like the title of this column, making something because you lack it is an expression of intellectual curiosity; at the same time, even with something that already exists, rearranging and changing how it is viewed is also an indication of human progression. (※2)

 

Now,

the next project on this PVC Pipe Guy’s mind is a downdraft protein skimmer, for which I’m drafting up a blueprint now. 

I tried to make this several times in the past, but it has been exceptionally difficult. 

Of course, it’s something I could just purchase, but to do that would be quite expensive. Making something oneself is more fun anyways.    

 

This is, 

the least I can do out of filial piety. (※3)

 

 

※1: Abalone can live in seawater around 20 degrees Celsius. If it gets to be around 12 degrees, they cease to move. Below that, and they may suffocate and die. A temperature at around 16 degrees allows abalone to thrive. At temperatures above that the abalone become “lively” with an increased metabolism, leading to blockages in the water tank and a quick reduction in water quality. 

 

※2：Raising awareness that the issues of the furniture industry can broadly connect with that of mankind is one of the objectives of this column, so to say.
