It’s still unclear when we can travel internationally again, but in the meantime we will continue to bring you travel inspiration and look forward to welcoming you to Japan when the time is right.

Hydrangeas (ajisai in Japanese) are synonymous with the rainy season that precedes summer and have been loved since ancient times. These fluffy blooms come in blue, pink, purple, white and many other colours, and brighten up temples and gardens around Japan throughout June and July. Pictured here is Hondoji Temple in Chiba Prefecture.

Hi ,

We hope you are all continuing to observe social distancing recommendations while easing back into the new normal way of life, with restrictions easing up in both Australia and New Zealand.

This month we share some tips for travelling during the rainy season in Japan and introduce some lesser known places to escape the crowds so you’ll be prepared for when international travel opens up.

Virtual Backgrounds

While restrictions are gradually easing, travelling to Japan remains a dream for now and it looks like video calls may become part of the new normal. Brighten up your next chats with our beautiful collection of virtual backgrounds.

Japan in June

June is associated with the rainy season but don’t worry, it doesn’t rain every day, just more often than usual. Read our June guide for tips for planning a trip during this period, and rainy-day activities – handy to know for a visit in any month.

Coast and Culture by the Capital

Under an hour by train from Tokyo is the  seaside retreat of Kamakura. Famous for the Great Buddha of Kamakura, its beaches and hiking trails, it's also home to Japan's first Museum of Modern Art. If visiting in June, don’t miss Meigetsuin Temple aka Hydrangea Temple.

Summer in Hokkaido

With milder weather than the rest of Japan in summer and no rainy season, this northernmost prefecture is well worth a visit in the warmer months too. The unspoiled wilderness of the national parks and spectacular flowers fields in Furano and Biei are worth a special mention.

Driving in Japan

A road trip in Japan is a fantastic way to explore lesser known areas and escape the crowds. Hokkaido, Okinawa and Kyushu are particularly great for exploring by car, and good news for the Aussies and Kiwis, driving in Japan is on the left!

Fukuoka's Hidden Gem

The lesser known peninsula of Itoshima offers spectacular coastline, a rare white torii gate (Sakurai Futamigaura) and great hikes. It’s perfect for escaping the larger cities on a summer road trip or cycle along the coast.

Sport in Japan

What comes to mind when sport and Japan is mentioned? Read on for an overview of some of the country’s most popular sports – they might not be what you would expect.

Children's Amabie Drawing Contest

Amabie is a Yokai (mythological monster or spirit) that has recently gained popularity in Japan. This is a great opportunity for your children to get creative during the school holidays and go into the draw to win some fantastic prizes.

Prince Hotels Safety Commitment

Prince Hotels has developed the Prince Safety commitment, a set of new protocols for hygiene and disinfection to be implemented in all hotels under their brands. These will help provide guests with a safe and clean environment as well as peace of mind during their stay.
