The summertime months of June to August is the season most well known for matsuri (traditional festivals) but they are held throughout the year to honour and celebrate nature, the seasons, tradition, historical events and/or community. The beginning of July is when the rainy season wraps up in Japan, which means one thing: the start of summer! This guide has some great tips on the best beaches to relax, which mountains and islands to explore and much more.

Diving in Japan

The best time to go diving in Japan is from mid-July through to the end of September. Okinawa in the south is always a popular option but there are even a number of great options near Tokyo, the closest being Osezaki Bay.

Although many visit Shizuoka to scale Mt Fuji, if you're here, do check out the region's culinary delights. Whether you have a sweet tooth, love things hot and spicy or enjoy sipping on tea, you can do all three while taking in the beauty of nature in Shizuoka.

Kamikochi, Nagano

 
Referred to as the jewel of the Japan Alps, this resort is popular in summer for those looking to beat the heat of the cities. The 15km valley of lush forests and surrounding alpine wonderland is a nature and adventure lover’s paradise, and is a part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park.

Hidden Treasures in Kochi

 

Kochi, which spans the bottom half of Shikoku, is one of Japan’s best kept secrets and is known for its picturesque coastline, pristine rivers and majestic mountains. From a newly launched luxury train to an art gallery on a beach, learn what this often overlooked city has to offer.

Kibune, Kyoto

 

Discover another side of Japan in the quaint mountain village of Kibune in northern Kyoto. It’s a great place to visit in summer to escape the heat and indulge in kawadoko, where you can enjoy fancy traditional kaiseki dishes while seated on a platform above the rushing water below.
