SIR DAVID CHIPPERFIELD CBE TO RECEIVE THE ROYAL GOLD MEDAL FOR ARCHITECTURE
The internationally-acclaimed British architect Sir David Chipperfield CBE has been named today (Thursday 7 October 2010) as the recipient of one of the world’s most prestigious architecture prizes, the Royal Gold Medal. Given in recognition of a lifetime’s work, the Royal Gold Medal is approved personally by Her Majesty the Queen and is given to a person or group of people who have had a significant influence 'either directly or indirectly on the advancement of architecture'. Speaking today David Chipperfield said of the honour: “I am overwhelmed by the decision of the RIBA to award me the 2011 Royal Gold Medal and to join a list that includes so many great architects and personal heroes.” More   Website
LIFE ON THE FARM IS A BREEZE

For farmhouse owners Ann and John Foggin, being able to open the windows is a breath of fresh air. Ventrolla North East was instructed to restore the windows at the five-star bed and breakfast accommodation on Tower Tosson Farm in Rothbury, Northumberland. The couple struggled to open the windows in the guest bedrooms as many of the sash windows had been stuck shut with layers of paint. John said: “Having the windows renovated has made such a difference.” More   Website
CPD SEMINARS: FLAT ROOF REPAIRS

NEW DEAL SEES MICROBAN TECHNOLOGY USED BY PANARIAGROUP FOR TILE PRODUCTS

A new deal with Italian Ceramics giant Panariagroup will see antibacterial technology from Microban used on its tile product ranges in five different European countries. The patent pending Microban technology being used by Panariagroup is called 3G Silver™ technology. This is built into the tile glaze during manufacture and so cannot wear off or wash away. On untreated surfaces, bacteria can double in number in 20 minutes but Microban disrupts their functioning, preventing the build up of colony formations. More   Website
NEW FLOOR FOR A NEW TERM AT LIGHTMOOR PRIMARY
When Lightmoor Village Primary School opened its doors for the very first time this term, excited pupils walked, ran and skipped along to join new classmates. Thanks to the installation of Altro’s safety flooring, there weren’t any slips or trips on the way. Commercial Flooring installed the floor at Lightmoor and Brian Wells, Contract Manager, said: “We’ve installed hundreds of metres of Altro’s products over the years and as ever the installation went very well.” More   Website


STO SUPPORTS A GRAND DESIGN
Channel 4s recent Grand Design (screened 22 September) featured the first house in England to be certified to Passivhaus standard, made possible by the extensive use of StoTherm Classic external wall insulation system. Architect Helen Seymour Smith set out to build a Passivhaus but, finding there was very little information on the principles in the UK, worked with Sto’s technical team and visited Sto in Germany to get comprehensive information on how the principles can be put into practice.
