SCHOOL TAKES SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO PRESERVING HERITAGE


A forward-thinking approach to delivering ‘best value’ and optimizing lifetime costs has been put into practice at a Lincolnshire school, with help from Z-Led. The William Stukeley CE Primary School in Holbeach has had to refurbish its 1980’s clock tower. To optimize effectiveness of the refurbishment, and deter theft of the tower’s lead flashing detail, which had been stolen in the past, contractor Mouchel advised the use of Z-Led’s innovative Aluflash environmentally-friendly lead flashing alternative. STATE-OF-ART HEADQUARTERS EMPLOYS STATE-OF-ART BUILD TECHNIQUES


A £12m state-of-art building for dance is set to achieve ‘excellent’ ratings, in part due to its innovative construction. Architects Strategic Design Alliance and contractor Wates worked closely with McVeigh Insulations to develop a ‘state of art’ build process that overcame the limitations imposed by the site’s location, whilst achieving the objectives for the building. Wates Construction design manager David Lingard elaborated, “Using SIPs panels from McVeigh gave us better quality control through the off-site, factory fabrication.” More

LEVOLUX’S COOL LOOK FOR ICONIC DERBY TOWER


As part of a £13.5 million refurbishment project, Levolux was invited to help improve the energy efficiency and internal comfort levels of the University of Derby’s Kedleston Road site, with the application of an attractive Timber Fin Solar Shading System. Dating back to the early 1960’s, the Kedleston Road site includes three multi-storey towers, set on a hill to the north west of the city. Over time, the Timber Fins will adopt a silver-grey patina providing long-lasting good looks. More

NICK ROSS LAUNCHES NEW CONSUMER CHAMPION FOR THE DOUBLE-GLAZING & CONSERVATORY TRADE
The first independent regulatory body for the double-glazing and conservatory industry is being launched with the backing of Nick Ross. The former BBC Crimewatch and Watchdog presenter is the face of the Double Glazing and Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS), which will provide protection for homeowners installing windows, doors, conservatories and related products. The Ombudsman scheme is set to improve the industry’s much-maligned reputation and help consumers choose honest, reliable installers. More


ROCKWOOL INSULATION: SUSTAINABLE AT SOURCE
Rockwool, manufacturer of non-combustible stone wool, has produced a guide on how Rockwool can help provide sustainable insulation solutions and systems for the whole building envelope. The guide, available through Rockwool’s website, is aimed at improving awareness and understanding of Rockwool’s energy saving products amongst architects, specifiers and builders. ”Sustainable at Source” offers a guide for developers through the building codes and assessments, including the Code for Sustainable Homes, BREEAM and the BRE Green Guide. More

Slimline Worktop Material Is Botox For The Kitchen.  Thin is in! That’s the watchword for today’s product designers, who employ high tech materials and advanced processes to achieve ever more slimline dimensions.  But that’s not always the case with kitchen design, where the emphasis has been on chunky, clunky and downright heavy, worktop materials. Granite Transformations, is pioneering the ‘thin is in’ trend, however, with its agglomerate worktops that are at least two-thirds lighter and thinner than other material. More


CHINA CALLS ON UK EXPERTISE FOR WORLD’S LARGEST TRADITIONAL CLOCK


Smith of Derby has been commissioned to create a traditionally weight-driven clock with world’s largest ever dials for the city of Ganzhou, South East China. The Harmony Clock Tower will feature an unprecedented 12.8 metre diameter dial on each of its four faces and will be driven by a unique mechanical movement. An innovative third hand charts the Chinese lunar chapters. Smith of Derby will produce one of its iconic Whitehurst timepieces for the prestigious project. More
CHUBB FIRE WORKS BEYOND THE NINE TO FIVE


Chubb Fire’s flexible working practices have been highlighted and praised by managers of the Howard Shopping Centre in Welwyn Garden City, following completion of a successful project to upgrade an existing fire safety installation. Chubb Fire won the contract to replace both the existing fire alarm and Public Address/Voice Alarm (PAVA) system, re-utilising as much of the existing fire alarm cabling network as possible to keep the project costs to a minimum and limit disruption to shops’ opening hours. CHRIS BRIGINSHAW APPOINTED BURDENS GROUP MARKETING DIRECTOR


Burdens has announced the appointment of Chris Briginshaw as group marketing director. Chris joined Burdens straight from school in 1984, working on the trade counter at the Heaviside Drainage depot in Keynsham, Bristol. He progressed rapidly and, on his 21st birthday, was made manager of the Culvers Road depot in Keynsham, subsequently managing the Swindon and Cinderford depots. Directorships followed: initially regional director south west and later regional director Wales and the west when the two regions were combined. More
