ROCKWOOL INSULATION: SUSTAINABLE AT SOURCE


Rockwool, manufacturer of non-combustible stone wool, has produced a guide on how Rockwool can help provide sustainable insulation solutions and systems for the whole building envelope. The guide, available through Rockwool’s website, is aimed at improving awareness and understanding of Rockwool’s energy saving products amongst architects, specifiers and builders. ”Sustainable at Source” offers a guide for developers through the building codes and assessments, including the Code for Sustainable Homes, BREEAM and the BRE Green Guide.

ALUMET WIN COVETED BUILDING AWARD


Warwickshire based specialist building contractor Alumet recently collected the Building award for Specialist Contractor of the Year. Director Dean Walton collected the award from comedian Michael McIntyre in front of 1300 construction professionals at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Park Lane. Alumet recently became one of the top 5 UK based specialist contractors and are able to design, manufacture and install everything required for the exterior façade of a modern building.

SCHOOL TAKES SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO PRESERVING HERITAGE
A forward-thinking approach to delivering ‘best value’ and optimizing lifetime costs has been put into practice at a Lincolnshire school, with help from Z-Led. The William Stukeley CE Primary School in Holbeach has had to refurbish its 1980’s clock tower. To optimize effectiveness of the refurbishment, and deter theft of the tower’s lead flashing detail, which had been stolen in the past, contractor Mouchel advised the use of Z-Led’s innovative Aluflash environmentally-friendly lead flashing alternative.

COVER IT UP TREADS CAREFULLY AT THE SHELDONIAN
Draping specialists Cover It Up was engaged to diligently black out 40 large windows at Oxford's Sheldonian Theatre, a Grade 1 Listed Building that was utilised to stage one element of the 2010 SKOLL World Summit event. Cover It Up's Elliot Stennett says, "It's a great tribute to the skills and dexterity of our crew to be asked back for the third year to help prepare this very special building for the conference section of the event".

CHINA CALLS ON UK EXPERTISE FOR WORLD’S LARGEST CLOCK


Smith of Derby has been commissioned to create a traditionally weight-driven clock with world’s largest ever dials for the city of Ganzhou, South East China. The Harmony Clock Tower will feature an unprecedented 12.8 metre diameter dial on each of its four faces and will be driven by a unique mechanical movement. An innovative third hand charts the Chinese lunar chapters. Smith of Derby will produce one of its iconic Whitehurst timepieces for the prestigious project.

SHACKERLEY CLADS NEW LANCASTER UNIVERSITY BUILDING


Wilson Mason & Partners specified Shackerley’s ceramic granite ventilated facades for Lancaster University’s new £7.6 million Information System Services (ISS) Building, to provide protection from the elements and improve its thermal efficiency and BREEAM rating (it achieved an 'Excellent' rating) with the minimum structural loading on the building frame. Sureclad ceramic granite cladding was specified for reasons of overall cost, quality of materials and the design and installation flexibility offered by the Queen’s Award winning system.

ANGLE RING FINDS PERFECT FORMULA FOR ABU DHABI LANDMARK


With this year’s Formula One season already upon us, everyone’s looking forward to seeing who’ll be fighting it out on the grid in the final race of the season at the Yas Island circuit. Abu Dhabi isn’t just the climax of the Formula One season, it also represents a pinnacle of achievement for Angle Ring who recently executed a contract for bending large diameter steel tubes for the Yas Island Hotel, the centrepiece of the Formula One circuit.
