TOP BUILDING PROJECTS IN NORTHERN IRELAND SHORTLISTED FOR RICS AWARDS
Impressive local building projects large, small, new and reborn have been shortlisted for Northern Ireland's most prestigious awards for excellence in the built environment. Twenty five entries ranging from the creation of a state-of-the-art mountain centre in the Mournes to the refurbishment and extension of an historic Belfast arts centre have been shortlisted for the RICS Northern Ireland Awards 2011. Projects in the running for the scheme also include the Merchant Hotel, Belfast; Hillsborough Castle; the Old Courthouse in Antrim and the conservation of buildings at the Laundry Yard, Florence Court, Enniskillen. The projects are competing for four category prizes - Regeneration, Sustainability, Community Benefit and Building Conservation - with an overall winner then selected. The four Northern Ireland category winners also go forward to the RICS Awards to compete against projects from across the UK and internationally. More. Website.
VISITORS TO YORK DUNGEON ARE IN SAFE HANDS

Tourist attraction, York Dungeon, has installed specialist emergency evacuation chairs from
Evac+Chair International following a review of its health and safety procedures. The dungeons welcome around 138,000 visitors a year and bring York’s gruesome history to life through its scary shows and exhibits. The Evac+Chairs have been installed in various parts of the dungeon, including the entrance and on the main evacuation route, to provide additional support for both employees and visitors in the event of an emergency evacuation. ELTA INVESTMENT PACKS A PUNCH

A new investment from the Applied Technology division of Elta Fans has significantly increased the production capacity at its engineering and manufacturing site in Fareham, Hampshire, with the introduction of the latest in sheet metal punching technology. A Trumpf TruPunch 2020 punching machine marks the newest addition to Elta’s already extensive manufacturing hardware and software, providing greater productivity and flexibility in the manufacture of fans and ancillary equipment employed in a wide range of building services applications. DIFFUSING DAYLIGHT

Newly opened Darwen Academy,  designed by Aedas architects, is one of many UK schools which incorporate Kalwall roofing or cladding, from Stoakes Systems. One of the most unusual features is the dramatic composition of 36 triangular Kalwall skylights over the central atrium. Also new is the dramatic walkway at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, clad with Kalwall, pierced at intervals with clear glazed full height windows. This highly insulating cladding system diffuses daylight without shadows or glare.

HOSPITAL UPGRADES WITH SPECIALIST CABLING


A hospital chose AEI Cables’ specialist cables when it came to a major refurbishment programme. The screened wiring cable Protec will provide continuity of power for lighting, while Enhanced Firetec is being used for the fire alarm system as part of the project at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, Derbyshire. Protec exceeds the requirements of BS8436 for use in walls, partitions and building voids where there is a risk of damage or penetration from nails or screws. More. Website.
ARCHIAL APPOINTED LEAD CONSULTANT

Archial has been appointed by Mitie Technical Facilities Management as lead consultant for the relocation of Aberdeen College’s Department of Music and Performing Arts to the Gallowgate campus in the city centre. The project consists of 750 sq m of refurbishment works to provide high quality music teaching rooms, project studios, technicians rooms, music and band practice areas, workshops, dressing rooms and a studio theatre.
