OFFICE FOR NATIONAL STATISTICS - NEW ORDERS IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY, 3RD QUARTER 2010
This bulletin shows new orders in the construction industry for the third quarter of 2010 in Great Britain.

Headline figures are:
  • the total volume (in £m) of all new construction orders in the third quarter of 2010 fell by 4 per cent compared with the second quarter of 2010
  • the total volume of new construction orders fell by 14 per cent compared with the same period in 2009
  • only the private housing and private commercial sectors showed a growth in new orders in the third quarter compared with the second quarter
All new orders figures quoted are seasonally adjusted and in constant (2005) prices.

New housing
The volume of private housing orders in the third quarter of 2010 rose by 49 per cent compared with the previous quarter and rose by 86 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier. These are based on constant price seasonally adusted estimates. The equivalent non-seasonally adjusted growths were 31 per cent and 94 per cent. The volume of housing new orders is back to the levels last seen in the first quarter of 2008.

WORCESTER RIVERSIDE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT BENEFITS FROM BISON PRECAST CONCRETE PRODUCTS

Bison Manufacturing supplied its precast Hollowcore and staircase products for a new upmarket housing development on the banks of the River Severn in Worcester. Housebuilder Taylor Wimpey used 5,400m2 of Bison’s 200mm Hollowcore floor units and 30m3 of its precast staircase products for a large block of new 1, 2 and 3-bedroom apartments. The long spans required to construct the four storey apartment block were well suited to Bison’s Hollowcore product. More   Website

Dulux Trade has reformulated its Fast Matt specifically for contractors who want to get ahead of the game in an increasingly tough market place. LATHAMS’ NEW FLOORING DIVISION - A ‘ONE STOP SHOP’ FOR THE TRADE
James Latham’s new dedicated flooring division opens its doors for business on 4th January 2011.  The new ‘one-stop-shop’ will see Lathams’ extensive range of solid and engineered wood flooring, as well as adhesives, screeds, underlays and liquid DPMs, all displayed under one roof.  The impressive new showroom will be located at Lathams’ Thurrock site, just minutes from the M25. YUILL HOMES’ APPRENTICES INSPIRE OTHERS
Yuill Homes’ apprentices Anthony Skinner and John Rudge, have been showing off their bricklaying skills in a bid to help inspire future construction careers. John and Anthony were chosen to carry out the bricklaying demonstration at Hartlepool College of Further Education, as part of a special open evening offering tasters of its many courses. During the evening, both showed off their bricklaying skills by building a five feet twisted pillar of bricks in front of dozens of visitors.
