CENTRAL OTAGO RECREATIONAL USERS SPRING FORUM 2009
Date: Wednesday November 18th at 7.30 pm, Alexandra Community Hall,
Skird St., Alexandra.
The topic for Central
Otago Recreational Users Spring Forum 2009 is
NON-MOTORISED RECREATION IN THE CENTRAL OTAGO HIGH COUNTRY
This is the complementary discussion to the Are We On The Right Track?
Forum on vehicles in the high country that we held two years ago, and
represents the other side of the coin.
The invited speakers at the Forum will be from the
NEW ZEALAND WALKING ACCESS COMMISSION.
We have Mark Neeson, the Chief Executive Officer, coming from
Wellington, along with John Aspinall of Mt Aspiring Station, Board
member, to talk about the Commission and to answer your questions about
what it can and will do.
One doesn't have to be a CORUF member to take part, this is a public
event and everyone interested is welcome to comment and to come.
Please mark the date on your calendar, and come - for the discussion of
non-motorised recreation, and for the rare chance to chat with the New
Zealand Walking Access Commission.

Auckland Conservation Board meeting 5 Nov.
Held in Warkworth, to the north of Auckland, the meeting was attended during the early afternoon by Peter Vahry and Simon Bishop. We heard a report from the DOC area manager, Tim Brandenburg, about the activities of the 'Vehicles on Beaches' working group which is being led and championed by the Auckland Regional Council. The ARC have budgeted $20,000 for radio advertising about vehicles on beaches, $20,000 to monitor the effects of vehicles on beaches, $20,000 on security patrols, $5000 to hire a 'suitable vehicle', $27,000 to hire a ranger for the summer and those are just some of their efforts. Not one of their plans involve 4x4 clubs.
Following that, Peter spoke about the limitations for 4x4 use in the region and raised the question of again getting permitted access to the 'Bombing Range' sand dunes, even if only in winter. At the meeting was a lady representing the NZ Fairy Tern Trust ( there are only 40 Fairy Terns) and she commented that there was no bird activity that vehicles would threaten from April to July.
Overall a worthwhile effort, as following the meeting there were two positive contacts with us from Board members

DOC in the South Island
have opened the Kaikoura area Clarence Reserve to limited 4x4 use...
www.nzfwda.org.nz/news/261
Unfortunately for 4x4 recreation, DOC have in the St James conservation area, commenced work to create a cycleway along the side of the Waiau River, exactly where the NZFWDA proposed to DOC in our submission, that a 4x4 loop could be crafted to link the Maling and Edwards Passes.
