Auckland Regional Council (ARC) vote to help with land etc. for 4x4 recreation
At its Parks and Heritage Committee 5th August meeting, the ARC voted to support the notion of having OHV recreation facilities. The reason, to get vehicles off beaches!
After commissioning a series of reports and surveys and then having the ARC staff prepare recommendations, the committee meeting re-wrote many of those recommendations.
The Rotorua / BoP Conservation Management Strategy (CMS) has actually been withdrawn despite being completed up to the the point where it needed to be approved by the NZ Conservation Authority.
The Auckland CMS 10 year review was due in 2005 but is unlikely to be ready until 2010.
The most recent status for conservancy CMS's can be found here

Muriwai Beach gets its annual clean by 4x4 clubs
A great turnout of NZFWDA members from many of the Auckland region clubs and especially from the Land Rover Owners (Auckland). With over 40 4x4's it was easy to cover the beach and the crews returned with over 7 cubic metres of rubbish and a heap of timber. The local newspaper ran a story a few days later.
Over 400 trees planted over the past year on the Coromandel
4WD club members have planted over 100 Kaihikatea and 300 Kauri saplings over the past 12 months. The majority have gone into the Maratoto area, with around 40 Kauri and 20 Manuka and 20 Kanuka also planted at the Stadia.
The 300 Kauri were funded by a DOC grant, while the Kaihikatea were bought by the Auckland 4WD Club.
All the plants have been 'ecologically sourced' which means that they have been raised from seed sourced from around the Coromandel region.
The last of the Kauri for this year, went into the ground on 30 August at Maratoto. Pictured are Barbara and Steve McMinn.
DOC Waikato have just announced that applications for project funding for 2009 close on 12 Oct
DOC invite comment on their suggestions for the management of the St James Conservation Area in the area above Hanmer in the South Island.
Comments close on Monday 14 September
2009.
Among their suggestions is..."Providing
for seasonal motorised vehicle access over
the Malings and Edwards passes to the true left (east) of the Waiau
River."
That idea certainly needs support from the 4x4 community and pressure to allow additional access by permits to clubs. (The terrain is predominantly rocky so the seasonal constraints should only be months when the cold might pose problems for casual users.)
This opportunity to comment should be followed up by every four wheeler, to ensure that our voice is clearly heard.
