UPDATE FROM
MARY DAVIS, MD

Hello everyone,

What an inspiring and motivational event was the 2010 Global Congress in Marrakech last week!

How wonderful to see the power, potential and energy of the Special Olympics global movement all brought together in one space!

Following this fantastic congress and the
SOEE Leadership Conference which took place in Casablanca before, I feel very confident that Special Olympics is on the cusp of real change and that our SOEE national programmes are well positioned to move steadily with progress.

So many good ideas and thoughts were explored in Morocco but what stayed with me was: we all have to work together to improve the quality and reach of our programmes; athletes and youth leaders need to be part of the decision making process; internal and external communications are key to getting more support and funds for our movement; and finally we must invest in strong leadership.  In the words of Brady Lum, COO of SOI:  “We want real leaders for our future and real excellence to push our boundaries.”

The
2011 - 2015 Strategic Plan will be our roadmap over the next five years.  As a region we now need to think about how we can make this plan work for SOEE and how we can use it to strengthen the region.

Each of us has the responsibility to ignite the movement in our homes and communities. And with this responsibility we must, like our athletes, show courage to change and ambition to achieve the unimaginable.  SOEE staff members are here to help you and to be a source of information, training and resources, so be sure to get the support you need.

Wishing you every success in your continued efforts.

Mary Davis
