News and Events
  September 2010
Dear Subscriber,

We hope you have been enjoying the rain and that you remembered to vote.

It was wonderful news to hear that one of our local artists Debbie Wills has been selected as a finalist in the prestigious $35,000 Country Energy Art Prize for landscape painting.  43 finalists have been selected from 435 entries which flowed in from across New South Wales.  The prize winner will be selected on 30 September at the Glasshouse.  An exhibition of the finalists’ artworks will then be open to public viewing 28 November 2010.  We wish you luck Debbie.

Nothing to do on these chilly weekends?  Why not consider participating in one of the eight millinery workshops to be held around the south west.  Popular milliner Waltraud Reiner, who has an international reputation as both a designer and tutor will be returning to the region.  Participants will have the opportunity to make a hat and/or expand their skills in hat making.   South West Arts received funding from the Sidney Myer Fund through their Arts and Humanities Small Grants Program to deliver the workshop series.  Places are strictly limited and bookings are essential, so be quick if you want to enjoy a day or two creating beautiful hats.

If you have time in September, visit Finley and Berrigan.  There are lots of events on including the Finley Agricultural Show which will be a great family day on the 5th September or if the horses are more your style enjoy the Berrigan Race Meet.  But for the best entertainment visit the Berrigan Lions Canola Festival and Lawnmower Races... there will be a Mr Canola competition, where the contestants have to wear a dress and parade pushing a lawnmower!

Former SAS soldier John Trist officially opened ‘A Digger’s Best Friend’ a war-time exhibition at the Peppin Heritage Centre Deniliquin 10 August 2010.  The exhibition offers an A to Z of animals in war and is highly informative and inspirational.  The artworks display the relationship between soldiers and animals during war and will be on display until 15 September.

Deniliquin Film Society presents the film ‘Food Inc’.  In Food Inc. filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on America's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of their government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. America's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and their own environment. They have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but they also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. They are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.   Will be well worth attending this screening, Saturday 4 September at the Deniliquin Neighbourhood Centre, at 7.30pm.  Admission is $10

Artist/Illustrator Marjory Gardner conducted workshops at the Finley Public School and at St Joseph’s Primary Finley last month. Over 400 Finley students participated and learnt all about the world of illustration and even had a go at doing their very own illustrations. All the students responded really well to Marjory’s workshops and hopefully has inspired some local buddy illustrators. Congratulations to St Joseph’s Primary Finley for organising the workshops and achieving funding through the Country Arts Support Program.
