Australia Council for the Arts | ArtStart Grants
The ArtStart program has been created to give financial assistance of up to $10,000 to arts graduates, helping them move from study to a professional career in the arts industry. Grants are available for artists in the visual arts, hybrid and media arts, performing arts, music, literature or in community arts and cultural development. Artstart can fund a career or small business development strategy that might include creating a portfolio of work, marketing yourself, setting up studio space, paying for business advice, disability or cultural awareness training, tools of trade, mentorship and more. There’s no age limit, however applicants need to have completed (or be about to complete) eligible arts training at Certificate IV level or above in the three years prior to the ArtStart application closing date.

ArtStart 2011 | Call for artwork design


ArtStart NSW is an arts and cultural program designed for young people aged 12 to 24 in NSW. The program provides opportunities to learn new skills through participating in arts, music and performance workshops and projects. ArtStart NSW also gives young people a chance to exhibit and perform their work during a two-week festival which happens in over 20 regional and metropolitan centres in NSW and online at www.artstart.com.au. ArtStart NSW is now looking to commission a young artist or designer aged between 12 and 24 to develop a new design and tagline to promote ArtStart NSW 2011. The successful artist will be paid a commission fee of $1,000 for the use of their design and tagline.

Australia Council for the Arts | Community Partnerships
This category provides funding of up to $20,000 for individuals, groups and organisations to develop and implement community arts and cultural development projects with a range of partners. The community partnerships committee supports a number of priority areas that cover a range of geographic, demographic and social contexts. These priority areas serve to focus effective use of the resources of community partnerships and include regional Australia, disability, young people, cultural diversity, emerging communities, Indigenous people, remote Indigenous communities and specific critical social and cultural issues requiring focused attention. For the purpose of this category, the term ‘partners’ refers to individuals or organisations that will help make the project happen. The partners will work in collaboration with the applicant, towards a shared vision and may contribute financially or in kind to the project. First time applicants are encouraged to apply.

Expressions Of Interest Invited- Regional residency for musicians living with disability


The Orange Regional Conservatorium invites expressions of interest nationally from professional musicians living with disability, for the Rewriting the Score residency and performance project.
Rewriting the Score is a five day, full-time residency where 13 musicians with and without disability will work together, led by an artistic director and music coordinators from Orange Regional Conservatorium, to create new music.  The project will culminate in a concert performance in May at the Orange Regional Conservatorium.
Rewriting the Score – Music Residency runs from 16 to 20 April 2011 and an honorarium fee of $1,400, plus travel and accommodation expenses are included. The travel and accommodation package will also be offered to support workers/carers where required.
The project consists of three stages,
•    Stage One: Residency – 16 to 20 April 2011
•    Stage Two: Showing and Forum – 20 April 2011
•    Stage Three: Performance Project – 13 and 14 May 2011
The Orange Regional Conservatorium is one of seven organisations to receive Arts NSW funding for arts and disability projects during 2011. With support from Accessible Arts and the Mental Health and Drug & Alcohol services, Western NSW Local Health Network, this project will provide a high profile opportunity within an arts environment for musicians with disability.

Head On Portrait Prize for Photography
Head on Portrait Prize, Australia's most prestigious photographic portrait competition, will be open for entries from 1 February until 13 March 2011. Australian photographers at home and around the world are invited to submit images for the 2011 competition, widely regarded as the leading photographic portrait prize in the country. The total value of prizes is over $40,000. The three photographers judged to have entered the best Australian contemporary photographic portraits will be awarded joint winners for 2011. Two further prizes will be presented for the Critic's Award and for People's Choice. Finalists' work will be exhibited as part of the Head On Photo Festival in Sydney from 5 May to 11 June 2011.

Bus Shelter Poetry | Call for submissions
Do you want to see your written work out there on the streets of Wagga? Wagga City Council and the Booranga Writers' Centre are now opening submissions for a new public poetry project. Poems are sought for display at selected bus shelters in the Wagga area – poems that are about, or in some way inspired by, the city of Wagga Wagga. Your poetry might include the city, the landscapes, the people – whatever Wagga means to you. Selected poems will be displayed in a large poster style format. Selection of poems will be a competitive process and payment of $200 will be offered to each successful poet. Due to the specific size of the posters, poems should be a maximum of 150 words, and limited to 20 lines (including blank lines).

Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award

Wangaratta Exhibitions Gallery holds a biennial Award for Contemporary Textile Art. Entries for the 2011 Award are now open. Professional artists working in any style of textile media are invited to make an entry for consideration within a competitive assessment process. A judging panel consisting of the Wangaratta exhibitions Gallery Director and two respected professionals will select a shortlist of finalists for the Award Exhibition at the Gallery from 4 June to 17 July 2011. The value of the Award in 2011 is $5,000 including GST and this includes the acquisition of the work.

RRR | Small Grants for Small Rural Communities


The FRRR's small grants program for small rural Australian communities offers around $900,000 a year in grants to benefit people in rural and remote communities. Grants of up to $5,000 will be made to not-for-profit organisations for projects and activities that offer clear public benefit for communities living in small rural and remote locations in Australia, contributing to their development in social and community welfare, economic, environmental, health, education or cultural areas.

Hunter Region Botanic Gardens Sculpture Prize
The Hunter Region Botanic Gardens at Heatherbrae near Raymond Terrace will hold the second annual Sculpture Prize in May 2011. Entries are invited for an outdoor exhibition, with prizes of $1,000 and $300; and an indoor exhibition, with prizes of $500 and $300. Please note the maximum size for works entered into the indoor exhibition is strictly 60cm x 60cm x 60cm. Works will be displayed from Sunday 8 May until Sunday 5 June 2011.

Faces of Griffith
Local artists and creative hobbyists are invited to submit a portrait of a community member, it can be of someone who is important to them or someone who plays an active role in the community.  Each portrait should include a 200 word short story detailing why the person in your portrait was chosen.  The exhibition will run from 21 April through to 8 May 2011.

Cultural Industries Award for Councils



The Local Government Cultural Awards celebrate commitment by councils to cultural development. South West Arts would be very proud if the councils from our region submited a project and entered the Awards. Please contact the SWA office if you would like help with completing the entry form.  Entries close at 5.00pm on 14 March 2011.
 
The Cultural Industries Award (CIA) is for leadership by councils in developing cultural industries with local communities. Part of the LGSA's annual Cultural Awards, the CIA is offered every three years and is now open for the second time. The inaugural Award was won by Byron Shire Council for facilitation of East of Everything, the first regionally based television drama series. The Cultural Awards website features hundreds of Local Government arts projects. You can quickly and easily feature the work of your council with just a paragraph and a photo.
