News and Events
March 2010
Dear Subscriber,

Well February was a very busy month which saw Corey Thomas visit Mathoura and run workshops about his 'River Crossing' Sculpture and his various other work. 'In the Bin' film Festival visited the Tocumwal Foreshore for a lovely evening featuring 12 short films and 'Showcase 2010' kicked off at the Hay Library with an exhibition of hats created during the 2009 'Hats off to Farming Women' millinery workshops.

March is also shapping up to be a very busy month with the opening of 'Terrain - Naviagating New Landscapes for the South West' exhibition at the Griffith Regional Gallery. If your group or organisation put in a CASP application, thank you for all your time and hard work pulling the application together. All applicants will be informed of the out-comes later this month, I have my fingers crossed for you all. Below is just a taste of what South West Arts has been up too and what’s on in the coming months, to see it all, visit our Events Calendar.

Keep an eye out for Fund It!, our monthly funding e-bulletin that will arrive in your inbox mid-month. It lists some highlights from our online Funding Database, an excellent resource for artists and community organisations.

Enjoy your arts

In the Bin – a lovely evening on the Toc Foreshore

On the 19th of February, when the sun went down, the projector kicked into gear and the short films begun, at the Tocumwal Foreshore. It was an excellent evening showcasing 12 short films which at times made the audience laugh, sigh and gasp. Approximately 140 people attended from Tocumwal and surrounding areas, everyone was asked for a gold coin donation with proceeds going towards the Berrigan Youth Council – Youth 4 Youth with the grand total raised $178.20. Thank you again to everyone who helped to make the event such a success.

Corey Thomas’s visit to Mathoura

In true February style the weather was hot and humid when Corey Thomas visited Mathoura on February 9th. Corey conducted workshops with the Mathoura Primary School grade 5 & 6 students and with a group of local artists and interested members of the public. Both workshops were a great success with everyone being won over by Corey’s charm. South West Arts Long Paddock – professional development project has one more workshop planned for May 2010 when Pamile Berg will visit and talk about the importance of caring for our Public Art. Contact SWA for more info.

Showcase 2010 at the Hay Library

After the success of the 2009 tour, South West Arts is proud to present ‘TRAVELLING SHOWCASE 2010’ the regional tour of home-grown artwork to venues across the South West of NSW. Its first location for 2010 is the Hay Library; stay tuned for the following locations.

Designed for non-traditional visual art spaces, the Travelling Showcase Exhibition is a multi component exhibition of local visual artwork, displayed on six custom made portable pedestals. It has been designed to be displayed in Local Government foyers, libraries and Visitor Information Centres in recognition of the very low level of formal visual arts spaces within the South West Arts region, one of only two regions in NSW to have no regional art gallery.

The first exhibition for the 2010 tour is of the hats created by participants in the ‘Hats Off to Farming Women’ millinery workshop put on by South West Arts in 2009. Tutor Waltraud Reiner who has an international reputation as both a designer and tutor and was real hit with all participants in the workshops. The hats currently on display were created by Nichole Varley, Lachlan Varley, Lani Houston, Kim Biggs, Sarah Houston & Jan Horneman.
