News and Events  August  2009
Dear Subscriber,

Welcome to another month of arts and cultural activity in the South West where you can look forward to a screening of an Oscar-winning film, learn printmaking, view photographs from the National Archive, listen to top-class musicians and learn how to establish a business as an artist. These are just some of the many events listed on our online Events Calendar.

In mid-August, you will also receive Fund It!, our e-newsletter dedicated to funding, awards and other opportunities for artists and regional communities. It highlights the more than 300 entries in our online Funding Database, an excellent resource for artists and community organisations. Remember that you can always easily unsubscribe, or change your preferences at any time.

This will be one of my last News and Events contributions and we look forward to welcoming a new Regional Arts Development Officer in September.

Enjoy your arts.......

Farewell to Nina O'Brien-Hehir
The South West Arts Board sadly farewells our great Executive Officer/Regional Arts Development Officer Nina O'Brien-Hehir who leaves next month to take up the position of Executive Support and Grants Officer at Intereach NSW. Nina has made an invaluable contribution to South West Arts over the past five years and was instrumental in the implementation and success of the 2007 - 2009 Strategic Plan. We wish Nina well in her new position and look forward to future partnerships between South West Arts and Intereach.

And so a new RADO is required
South West Arts is seeking a dynamic and self motivated person to fulfil the position of Regional Arts Development Officer. The Regional Arts Development Officer (RADO) will facilitate the development of projects and initiatives to promote arts and community cultural development in the South West region of New South Wales. The RADOs primary responsibilities are to oversee the activities of the organisation and manage the development, implementation and ongoing activities contained within the Triennial Plan and annual Business Plan. Management of these activities includes all facets of planning, financial management, governance, staff supervision, evaluation and reporting to the Board. Download a position description here. Applications including a cover letter, CV and response to the criteria should be emailed or posted to: South West Arts, Att: Chairperson - Lani Houston PO Box 378 Deniliquin 2710 or eo@southwestarts.com.au by 5pm Friday 7th August 2009.

Metro Screen brings youth filmmaking to Barham and Hay
Through TAFE NSW funding and as part of the ArtStart Festival, South West Arts will be working with Sydney company Metro Screen to run two three-day intensive filmmaking workshops for young people in Barham and Hay. The Barham workshops will be hosted in early August by the Barham High School with the support of the Golden Rivers Theatre Group, and the Hay workshops will run in September at the Hay War Memorial High School. Participants will learn all aspects of short filmmaking and will produce films that represent their experience of being young in rural Australia. If you are interested in participating, or know someone who is, please contact the Barham or Hay schools directly.

St Kilda Film Festival breaks regional attendance records
The St Kilda Film Festival has returned to the South West region with three of only four screenings in NSW outside Sydney, and has managed to smash national attendance records in two of the three venues. 137 attended at Tocumwal, (pop. 2000), closely followed by 131 in Moulamein (pop 465!). Tocumwal now takes the title of best attended screening in regional Australia.  South West Arts in partnership with the Moulamein Art Group, Deniliquin Film Society and Southern Riverina Arts made the tour a reality by working together to promote and host the screenings in their local communities. The St Kilda Film Festival is one of many programs brokered by South West Arts to bring contemporary, high quality and cost-effective cultural opportunities to the South West region of New South Wales. Strong audiences such as those experienced over the weekend reinforce the role and benefit of a locally driven and staffed Regional Arts Board within the local region.
