New Poem of the Day

This week's Poem of the Day is from Geoff Hattersley's collection, 'Back of Beyond'.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING

You were writing dud cheques
like no one’s business,
I was splashing
the forged tenners around.

In the hole in the road
someone sang
‘Take Me to Tulsa’,
snow settling on his sombrero.
I tossed him a tenner
screwed into a ball.

A woman approached
armed with documents
and truth;
she was selling badges,
a definite bargain
at a tenner apiece.

I signed the petition
to end the war,
I do a lot
of possibly useless writing.
