Poetry at The Showroom
this week

TUESDAY 13 OCTOBER 7pm

Sally Goldsmith, John Lyons, Mike Di Placido.

Tickets £6/£4 (cons) on the door or book tickets from the Showroom – 0114 275 7727.

Sheffield’s own incomparable Sally Goldsmith, whose debut collection Singer is hot off the press, reads (and sings!) alongside legendary Trinidadian poet and performer John Lyons,  together with ex-professional footballer Mike Di Placido (whose pamphlet Theatre of Dreams features the Man Utd days of Dennis Law and George Best).  This promises to be one of the most warm and entertaining of the many gems in this year’s Off the Shelf programme.

FRIDAY 16 October, 7:30pm

Michael McCarthy and Michael Schmidt.

£6/£4 (cons) on the door or book from the Showroom 0114 275 7727.

Michael McCarthy is winner of the Patrick Kavanagh Award and of the Poetry Business Competition 2008/09, judged by Michael Longley.   Originally from West Cork, Michael is a priest in Sherburn-in-Elmet. At the Races, launched tonight, is a wonderful evocation of rural Ireland by one of the best poetry story-tellers now writing.

Michael Schmidt is a major figure in contemporary poetry. Editor of PN Review and Carcanet Books, his own poetry includes PBS Recommendations and Special Commendations, and his astonishing Resurrection of the Body was a critical and popular success. Tonight sees the launch of Michael Schmidt’s Collected Poems.
