We offer two 90-minute classes each day in fiddle, flute, whistle, guitar, piano, bodhran, harp, uilleann pipes,
button accordion (C#/D & B/C), piano accordion, tenor banjo,
bouzouki, mandolin and singing. Enrichment classes teaching Irish music
history or exploring Irish music today will also be offered each day. Additionally, daily workshops presenting music
theory, use of ABCs (cyber notation), playing pain free, learning by ear, and basic sound system
operation will be available. For youth ages 6-10, we offer a “Kids FUN Camp.” The kids camp offers an introduction to Irish music and will include games, arts and crafts, singing, instrumental instruction, folk dancing, and storytelling. Youth 11 and older may attend our regular classes. Check out our classes at CLASSES and the schedules.
|
| The retreat will officially begin
on Thursday night, October 28, with a “meet & greet” BBQ and bonfire.
Classes start Friday morning and continue through Sunday late afternoon.
Each evening there will be concerts by instructors and mini-concerts during
meals with a “farewell” concert on Sunday evening. On the Saturday night
program, there will be a “Texas Tune & Song Tussle” which features friendly
competition among student ensembles that form at the retreat vying for
“O’Diddley Awards.” Sessions will be plentiful and organized by levels
with some instructor-led and others not. And finally, there are horse rides offered on Saturday afternoon.

|
A variety of lodging options on
campus will be available from Thursday evening through Sunday night including
cottages, motel rooms, dorm beds, RV spaces and tent camping. Meals will
be offered Thursday dinner through Monday breakfast for $8.50 each. The retreat

Class Times Changed
We’ve altered the class time periods each day to finish earlier each day. The schedule will be as follows: breakfast at 8:30-9:30 a.m.; the first
morning class at 10-11:30 p.m.; an enrichment class from 12-1 p.m.; lunch from
1-2 p.m.; the afternoon class from 2:30-4 p.m.; Tune Tussle rehearsal or other
workshops from 4:30-5:30 p.m.; dinner from 5:30-6:30 p.m.; and instructor
concerts beginning earlier at 7 p.m. See
the Retreat Schedules at the top of the CLASSES page.
Ages Have Changed
The regular class program at the retreat is now for students
ages 11 and older. We encourage younger
students to enroll in our Kids FUN Camp (ages 6-10). The only means by which a younger student may
participate in classes is to submit a recording of the child’s playing and a
reference letter from a music teacher assessing their ability and good behavior
in class. Because we primarily have
adults attending the retreat, we think this is the best way to go. Also, we offer an O'Flaherty Irish Music Youth Camp
on July 12-13 that is just for kids and would be more appropriate for younger
students.
NEW Kids FUN Camp
Building on our kids program from last year, we have decided
to offer structured childcare that is “pay as you go.” The program will include fun activities for
kids ages 6-10 and be held from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Activities include music, singing, dancing,
arts & crafts, field trips at the camp, games and more. Cost is $3 per hour per child up to a family
maximum cost of $6 per hour. We also
plan to offer child sitting services during the concerts at the same rates.
NEW Fiddle Program
We have invited three guest instructors to teach fiddle this
year – Kevin Burke, Oisin Mac Diarmada and John McEvoy. Instead of offering separate intermediate and
advanced classes, we have combined the two and the students are asked to select
the particularly teacher from whom they want to learn. This is commonly done in most Irish music
camps. For beginners and those new to
the Irish style, we will continue to offer our Basic Fiddle classes. PLEASE NOTE:
When you sign up for fiddle classes, you must select all classes from
the same instructor. Because of our
class size limitations, to do otherwise might cause overcrowding of some
classes which is unfair to those students.
NEW Guitar Program
Beginning with this year’s retreat, we will offer an Irish
Guitar Fundamentals course and another course focusing on a particular tuning
as taught by a guest instructor. This
year, Jeff Moore will teach the fundamentals course which will explore rhythms
on DADGAD, dropped-D and standard tunings.
Sean McElwain, the exciting guitarist of Teada, will teach a course
solely on DADGAD guitar.
Tune & Song
Tussle Changed
A change from last year, we will have two “official” rehearsals instead of
three for those interested in participating in this year’s Tune & Song
Tussle. However, you are encouraged to
find other times to work on your performances with your ensembles. If you can find a meeting room that’s not
being used, you are welcomed to use it.
For details about this friendly competition, go to TUSSLE.
Enrichment Classes
Reduced to One Hour
Our enrichment classes will now be held 12-1 p.m. each day and reduced from 90
minutes to one hour. All of our guest
instructors have issued a hearty “amen to that.”

Youth Camp July 12-13
This will be the third year for the O'Flaherty Irish Music Youth Camp, an exciting day camp for kids ages 6-17. It
will be held at The Heights Baptist Church in Richardson, Texas, and will focus
on teaching kids how to play Irish music in a fun way. Instruments taught will include fiddle,
flute, tinwhistle, guitar, piano, mandolin/tenor banjo/bouzouki, harp and bodhran.
There is also a "Fun with Irish Music" class to give younger children
some enjoyable exposure to the basics of music. The tinwhistle and bodhran
classes are accessible even to those who are absolute beginners on the
instrument, so don't let lack of previous experience stop you from signing
up!
In addition to instrument classes, there
will be singing, dancing, games, concerts, a pizza supper and
more. On the last day of the camp, the
campers will participate in a Tune Tussle when they will get to perform musical
acts that they prepared during the two days of camp. Tuition is $75 for two days and $50 for one day. Lunches must be brought to camp each day. The pizza supper on Monday night is open to campers and their families and is free for students and one parent. An instructor concert will follow. Scholarships are available. If interested, visit the youth camp website at www.oflahertyretreat.org/youthcamp or call the camp director Gordon McLeod at 972-530-0757. Online enrollment has begun.

"The classes - excellent quality. I came away with plenty of value. The schedule was right on the money---not too
long or cluttered, and not too short."

really have the schedule figured out well.
Perfect - all around perfect. Don't change a thing."
"Camp Hoblitzelle is a perfect place for the retreat.
It is quiet with lots of room and a feeling of a college campus. Spontaneous
sessions add to the charm of the retreat. Every facility that I saw was clean
and well kept." "There's never been a camp that was better organized and operated with such loving and caring."
"Meals were unbelievable, for a campground. Truly. Never
have I had camp food that good!"
"The instructor concerts were such a treat, and were the
heart of the retreat. Being able to see and hear the music being made by the
'Masters' was indispensable. The quality
of sound of the concerts in the chapel was great and the musicianship was
breath taking."
"Thank you to all the volunteers and instructors and staff
who make this experience possible. It is uplifting and also humbling to
participate in this retreat. It reconnects me to the music; it inspires me to
pursue more in my music, and brings me a great sense of accomplishment and
pleasure." |
