A time to be born, and a time to die... Eccl. 3

Daphne Solomon, UMA graduate and owner/director of Tupelo Children's House in Mississippi, sends us her story in pictures of the life and death of Rosie, the class guinea pig for 8 years.

"The past couple of weeks we had been talking about Rosie getting old, slowing down, and having some 'old age' problems. One morning, there was a change in Rosie...he was breathing, but we knew he was not going to be getting up again. Rosie was laid comfortably in a little cradle, while the children all gently said their goodbyes to him. Rosie stopped breathing about 20 minutes later, while the children were out on the playground."

Saying Goodbye:

Daphne brought Rosie outside to the children in a pretty little box, and told the children he had died. Daphne's son loosened the soil in the back yard, and the children helped dig a hole for Rosie's grave...who would be buried the following day.

Preparing the soil:

Here are pictures from Rosie's service the next day, which happened to be Earth Day. Daphne: "Sort of the whole 'circle of life' theme going on that day."

Rosie is laid to rest:

Daphne: "Parents have had very positive feedback on how we've handled the whole 'life and death' issue with Rosie...all of our parents have appreciated it and supported it."

The children will certainly remember this precious time of saying goodbye to their Rosie. They were given the opportunity to be part of the life cycle process. They will inevitably be able to deal with death in the future in a much healthier way because of this positive experience.

Thank you Daphne Solomon, for sharing this special experience at Tupelo Children's House !
