Val Lee in Japan!

 

ヴァル・リさんが、日本でで約1か月のフェローシップを行っています。
ヴァル・リさんは映像作品やパフォーマティブ・インスタレーション、ライブアートなどを制作するアーティストであり、ディレクターです。また、2008年に「ゴースト・マウンテン・ゴースト・ショベル・コレクティブ」を創設し、国のシステムや構造的暴力、戦争、現代における精神状態などをテーマとする、視覚芸術と舞台芸術を横断する作品を制作しています。作品の演者や観客は、不確定なシナリオや行動スクリプトによって創造される、儚く夢幻的な「状況」を体験します。これまでにアメリカ、メキシコ、日本などで作品を制作、発表し、さまざまな文化的背景を持つ俳優、ダンサー、美術史家とのコラボレーションを行なっています。今回のフェローシップでは、近年日本で発表した作品に関連するリサーチを深め、またさまざまな政治状況や歴史、文化の中での協力の精神を理解するため、広島、沖縄をはじめ、日本各地を訪れます。

 

Val LEE is conducting her 1-month fellowship in Japan.
Val Lee is an artist and director who creates works including videos, performative installations, and live art. In 2008, Lee founded the Ghost Mountain Ghost Shovel Collective, creating works in the fields of visual and performing arts that address themes such as national systems, systemic violence, war, and contemporary mental states. Performers and audiences in Lee’s works experience ephemeral and dreamlike "situations" created through temporal scenarios and action scripts. Lee has created and presented works in the United States, Mexico, Japan, and other countries, collaborating with actors, dancers, and art historians from diverse cultural backgrounds. During this fellowship, Lee will expand the research related to the work recently presented in Japan and will visit Hiroshima, Okinawa, and other parts of Japan to deepen the understanding of the spirit of collaboration in different political, historical, and cultural situations.

ニューヨーク州立大学で映画制作を専攻し、卒業後、2008年に「ゴースト・マウンテン・ゴースト・ショベル・コレクティブ」を創設。映像作品はこれまでに、SOMAアート・ベルリン、台北現代美術館、ヴァナキュラー・インスティテュート（メキシコ）、HKW（ドイツ）、グラン・パレ（フランス）、光州ビエンナーレ（韓国）、台湾ビエンナーレなどで展示されている。また、ライブパフォーマンスは京都アートセンター、台湾国立劇場、台北芸術祭などで上演された。アジアン・カルチュラル・カウンシル、香港財団、国立文化芸術基金会、C-LAB、オーストラリアのパフォーマンス・スペースなどから助成を受け、2017年に台新芸術賞視覚芸術部門を受賞。

 

Val LEE

Graduated from the State University of New York with a major in Filmmaking. In 2008, Lee founded the Ghost Mountain Ghost Shovel Collective. Lee’s video works have been exhibited at SOMA Art Berlin, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei, the Vernacular Institute (Mexico), the HKW (Germany), the Grand Palais (France), the Gwangju Biennale (Korea), and the Taiwan Biennial. Live performances have been staged at the Kyoto Art Center, the National Theater in Taiwan, the Taipei Arts Festival, and others. Lee has received support from the Asian Cultural Council, the Hong Foundation, the National Culture and Arts Foundation, C-LAB, and Australia’s Performance Space, and was awarded the Taishin Arts Award for Visual Arts in 2017.

福原 冠さん、三橋俊平さんニューヨークへ！ 
Kan Fukuhara and Shumpei Mitsuhashi in New York!

 

福原冠さんは、様々な劇団で主要な役を務める俳優として活躍するほか、2015年に立ち上げた自身の演劇ユニット「SANPIN」で創作活動も行なっています。また、2016年からは俳優やダンサーによる稽古会「無題の稽古会」を企画・運営し、言葉と身体について考察しています。今回の2ヶ月のフェローシップでは、共同ディレクターとしてスタジオ運営を計画しているダンサーの三橋俊平さんと共にニューヨークに滞在し、劇場やスタジオ、学校などで行われるワークショップ、リハーサル、レッスンに参加します。演劇とダンス両面から稽古について調査し、稽古場が社会においてどのような機能を持つのか、またどのように社会とつながっているのかを探究します。さらに、ニューヨークで多様な背景を持つ役者やダンサーとの交流を通じて、視野を広げることを目指しています。

 

Kan FUKUHARA is an actor who plays leading roles in various theater companies in Japan. In addition, he has been involved in creative activities with his own theater unit, "SANPIN," which he founded in 2015. Since 2016, he has been planning and organizing "SESSION UNTITLED," a rehearsal group for actors and dancers that explores the relationship between language and the body. For this 2-month fellowship, Fukuhara will stay in New York with Shumpei MITSUHASHI, a dancer with whom he is planning to co-direct a rehearsal studio. They will participate in workshops, rehearsals, and lessons at theaters, studios, and schools across New York. They aim to explore how rehearsals are conducted in both theater and dance, and to investigate how these rehearsal spaces function within society and their connections to the broader community. Through interactions with actors and dancers from diverse backgrounds, they hope to broaden their perspectives and engage with a variety of values and practices.

福原冠

明治大学文学部文学科演劇学専攻在学中に演劇活動を開始。卒業後は、範宙遊泳、ロロ、木ノ下歌舞伎、悪い芝居、FUKAIPRODUCE羽衣、Baobab、KUNIOなど、次世代の演劇界を担うカンパニーに出演。2014年に山本卓卓主宰・範宙遊泳の劇団員となる。また、2015年には同世代の俳優と立ち上げた演劇ユニット【さんぴん】の旗揚げ公演を行う。近年の出演作に『バナナの花は食べられる』、『心の声など聞こえるか』、『ジャズ大名』などのほか、ダンス公演にも出演している。

 

Kan FUKUHARA

Fukuhara began his theater activities while studying at the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts, School of Arts and Letters at Meiji University. After graduation, he performed with several emerging theater companies, including HANCHU-YUEI, LOLO, Kinoshita Kabuki, Warui Shibai, FUKAIPRODUCE Hagoromo, Baobab, and KUNIO. In 2014, he became a member of HANCHU-YUEI, a company led by Suguru Yamamoto. In 2015, he co-founded the theater unit SANPIN with fellow actors and held its debut performance. Recent works he has appeared in include “Banana no Hana wa Taberareru,” “Kokoro no Koe Nado Kikoeruka,” and “Jazz Daimyo,” as well as dance performances.

 

Shumpei MTSUHASHI

Mitsuhashi graduated from the Department of Performing Arts, College of Arts, Tamagawa University. While in university, he developed an interest in physical expression, and after graduation, he created solo works and led his own project, Otona Shonen. He has also participated as a dancer in works by various choreographers, contributed to collective theater creations, organized independent rehearsal sessions with actors, and worked on multi-disciplinary collaborative projects. Recent works he has appeared in include “Watashitachi wa Kaeru Tsuchi Sura Motanai”, “#Macbeth,” and “Kikoenai Nami.”

シムラブロスさん米国へ！ 
SHIMURAbros in the United States!

 

SHIMURAbrosは、シムラユカとケンタロウ姉弟による映画作家、現代美術家ユニットであり、映画、映像作品に加え、光や光学ガラスを用いた彫刻作品やインスタレーションも手がけています。今回の2ヶ月間のフェローシップでは、サンフランシスコを中心に米国にて、日本国憲法の人権条項の起草に寄与したベアテ・シロタ・ゴードンに関するリサーチを行い、彼女の歴史や洞察、また近年の作品で取り組んでいる戦争や難民問題について理解を深めることを目的としています。また、現地の人々との交流を通して生きた物語を収集し、ベアテ・シロタ・ゴードンと現代の日本社会における女性との繋がりに焦点をあてた新たな物語を紡いでいくことを目指します。

 

SHIMURAbros is a filmmaker and contemporary art duo consisting of Yuka Shimura and her brother Kentaro. In addition to films and video works, their works include sculptures and installations using light and optical glass. During this two-month fellowship, they will conduct research in the United States, primarily in San Francisco, on Beate Sirota Gordon, who contributed to the drafting of the human rights clauses in the Japanese Constitution. They aim to deepen their understanding of her life and insights, as well as to further explore themes of war and refugee issues, which are addressed in their recent works. Additionally, through exchanges with local people, they will collect living stories and focus on the connection between Beate Sirota Gordon and women in contemporary Japanese society, with the aim of weaving new narratives.

SHIMURAbros

ユカ（多摩美術大学卒後、英国セントラル・セント・マーチンズ大学院にて修士号を取得）とケンタロウ（東京工芸大学 映像学科卒）による姉弟ユニット。平成21年度文化庁メディア芸術祭アート部門優秀賞受賞。その後カンヌ及びベルリン国際映画祭での上映をはじめ、日本国内外の美術館や芸術祭で作品の展示を行う。近年は恵比寿映像祭への出品や、NTU CCA Singaporeのレジデンスプログラム参加など、活動の場を広げている。2017年にArtReview Asia誌のA Future Greatsに選ばれる。平成26年度ポーラ美術振興財団在外研究助成を得て拠点をベルリンに移し、現在はオラファー・エリアソンのスタジオに研究員として在籍し活動している。

SHIMURAbros

SHIMURAbros is a sister-brother duo comprising Yuka Shimura, who holds a bachelor’s degree from Tama Art University and a master’s degree from University of the Arts London: Central St Martins, and her brother Kentaro, who holds a degree in Imaging Art from Tokyo Polytechnic University. After receiving an Excellence Award in the Art Division of the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival, hosted by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, they went onto have their works shown at Festival de Cannes and the Berlinale Festival and exhibited by museums and art festivals in Japan and overseas. In recent years they participated in the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions, and have taken part in the residence program at the National University of Singapore’s Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA). In 2017, ArtReview Asia magazine named SHIMURAbros as a “future great”. They relocated to Berlin in 2014 on a research grant from the Pola Art Foundation, where they currently reside as researchers at the studio of Olafur Eliasson.

ACC Japan Gala Dinner2024 @Tokyo American Club

 

11月7日、ACC日本財団のファウンディングメンバーや支援者の皆様約300名のゲストをお迎えし、東京アメリカンクラブにてACCジャパンガラ・ディナーを開催いたしました。
小濱明人さん（ACC 2011、尺八）、小山 豊さん（津軽三味線）、堀越 彰さん（ドラム）による素晴らしいパフォーマンスで幕を開け、2024年度のグラント受賞者の紹介や、アルムナイの寄贈による作品のチャリティ・ライブオークションが行われ、大変盛況な会となりました。本イベントにご協力をいただきましたすべての方々、ご参加いただきました皆様に心より感謝申し上げます。

 

On November 7th, ACC Japan Gala Dinner 2024 was held at Tokyo American Club, welcoming around 300 guests, including the founding members and supporters of ACC Japan Foundation. The event opened with a stunning performance by Akihito OBAMA (Shakuhachi, ACC 2011), Yutaka OYAMA (Tsugaru Shamisen), and Akira HORIKOSHI (Drums). The evening also featured the introduction of the 2024 grantees, as well as a live auction of works donated by alumni, making it a highly successful and vibrant gathering. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported and participated in this event.
