Dear Friends and Supporters,
This month, it is my immense pleasure to join the World Health Organization in congratulating the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for their new road safety laws to protect children. The National Assembly of Vietnam passed two measures with strong majority to require children under 10 years of age to sit in the back seat of vehicles. They also require children to be secured in an approved child restraint system if they are under 10 years and 135cm tall. Children must be seated in the rear of a car and child safety restraints used from 1 January 2026.
The changes to the Law of Road Traffic Order were supported by multiple partners including AIP Foundation, the Center for Health Consultation and Community Development (CHD), the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) and the Hanoi University of Public Health (HUPH), and with generous funding from the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS).
The good news continues from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, where in an effort to promote safe mobility awareness among young adults and university students aged 18-25 we recently organized an engaging helmet safety workshop as part of the
Heads Up! program. The
Heads Up! program, currently in its second phase, aims to challenge perceptions that helmets compromise appearance.
To kick-start the next phase of the
Chevron Street Wise program, throughout July, the AIP Foundation Thailand team visited the school sites and met with school and government officials to prepare for the program events later this year.
This summer also provided an opportunity to host a weekend of Master Teacher Trainings as part of the program in the spirit of safeguarding vulnerable students on their way to school. The Master training welcomed a total of 84 teachers from two provinces to learn about safe mobility skills and how they can be at the forefront of ensuring their students’ lives are better protected on their way to and from school.
This month, we turn our focus to the upcoming Safety 2024 conference in New Delhi, India on 2nd-4th September 2024. We will be there to share our knowledge and and experiences and hope to see you there.
As we pave the way forward together, and look toward the 4th Global Ministerial Conference, I invite you to please read on.
Sincerely,
Mirjam Sidik
