Plant Tips of the Month
Caring for Houseplants in the Fall and Winter
Get some tips on maintaining healthy houseplants during the cooler months.

Houseplants generally thrive during the spring and summer months, but the real challenge is helping them survive the fall and winter. Part of the problem is that indoor humidity levels drop considerably when homeowners fire up their heaters. Dry air can be devastating to houseplants, especially considering that most are tropical in origin and require a humid environment to thrive. Here are some tips to keep your houseplants happy.

Houseplant Care Tip #1: Mist Your PlantsIdeally mist indoor plants with water once a day, but three times a day is even better. Although this can be time consuming, tropical houseplants benefit from the humidity. Alternatively, you can position houseplants near an indoor water feature, which will increase the humidity around the plants.

Houseplant Care Tip #2: Wipe Dust off Leaves and Stems Accumulated dust on leaf surfaces can plug up pores, making it difficult for plants to "breathe." Wiping leaves routinely with a damp cloth will correct the problem.

Shelly's Hot Tip Of The Month

10 Things to Do In and Around Your Home This JANUARY To Keep Your Home Clean and Well Maintained in the New Year Ahead.

January Checklist: 10 things to include in your home cleaning and preventative maintenance program this month to keep your home well maintained.

1. Let There be Dark! In other words, Virginia, it’s time to take down the Christmas lights.

2. Clear the Clutter. Very, very carefully, wrap and put away every ornament and every light and every Christmas decoration. Very, very carefully put them in boxes and label them so you can find them more easily next year. (Now, was that so hard?)

3. Out with the Old, In With the New. Clean out your closets to make room for Santa’s bounty. Share what you don’t need anymore with the less fortunate.

4. The Party's Over... So clean your holiday linens and put them away till next year. Ditto for those festive reindeer plates. Box them carefully with cardboard between the dishes so Blitzen doesn’t wind up with a chipped antler.

5. Soft Stuff. Scoop up all the decorative pillows, the afghans, the throws, etc., and launder them or send them to the cleaners.

6. Hard Stuff. Sanitize hard surfaces such as counters, telephones, laptop computers, etc. (It’s the cold season, after all).

7. Happy Houseplants. Clean, healthy houseplants add a breath of fresh air to a room. Dusty houseplants contribute a more funeral tone. Clean them and they will clean your air. Simply wipe the leaves with an electrostatically charged cloth. It works like magic.

8. Yours are Fake? No problem. Blow dry silk flowers clean, or else pop them in a plastic bag with a little salt and shake vigorously.

9. More Spicy Info. Clean your pantry. Toss foods your kids will never eat; foods that have long since expired; spices that have lost their oomph.

10. And on a Cold, Icky Day When You've Nothing Else to Do... Clean all the electronics. Clean the CD player, the remotes, the HDTVs. Wipe down your video camera. Read the directions (finally) for your digital camera. Try storing all warranties and manuals in one file so you’ll know where they are.

Craftsman Tool of the Month

Craftsman’s new folding ratcheting clench wrenches have adjustable jaws that can fit a wide range of fastener sizes. Form the looks of it, they auto-fit to any 6pt metric or inch hex fasteners, and potentially several other types as well. The new Craftsman clench wrenches are available in a 2-piece set that includes 6-inch and 8-inch versions. Both tools feature folding handles, and it looks like the heads can be adjusted and locked in at several angles for easier fastener access. Spring-loaded jaws create a convenient ratcheting-action.
